Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to solve the storage issue in my small apartment using Ikea Metod cabinets. My goal is to create as much storage space as possible within a limited area, without making it feel cluttered or impractical. It is especially important for me to design the cabinets in a modular and efficient way to make the best use of the available space – considering depth, height, and the interior layout.

Does it make more sense to go for tall cabinets with multiple levels or rather deeper cabinets equipped with lots of interior fittings and clever organizational elements? Are there any experiences with specific interior fittings that are particularly recommended for versatile use of the space? I would also appreciate tips regarding doors and their opening angles.

I look forward to your suggestions, ideally with examples of how you planned your Metod cabinets in small floor plans. Thanks in advance!

A brief addition: In small spaces, it’s worth considering usage habits alongside cabinet height. Tall cabinets are often less practical because shelves at the top are hard to reach, which can waste storage space.

I would store items that are rarely used at the top. Additionally, internal fittings like pull-out shelves or rotating carousels help make better use of the storage space.

If sliding doors are not an option, consider whether inward-opening hinged doors or folding doors could be alternatives – they require less clearance than standard doors.

Hey, I have tall Metod cabinets combined with different inserts – drawers, wire baskets, and shelves – and I can only recommend getting creative! I equipped some parts with LED strips, which provide great visibility, especially when there is little natural light.

And very important: organize the interior layout based on usage! This way, you avoid daily rearranging and don’t waste unnecessary energy searching.

I often question the recommendation for tall cabinets without further explanation. If the top surfaces cannot be used effectively or reached safely, focusing solely on height is not always practical.

I also wonder whether the suggested shallower units with depths of 37 or 40 cm (14.5 or 15.7 inches) really provide a sufficient storage alternative. There is often a lack of comparison between storage volume and ergonomic accessibility. Additionally, the combination with doors might restrict access.

Therefore, I recommend analyzing the space holistically, including circulation areas and furniture placement, to make an informed decision.

That’s exactly my point – I don’t want half-baked solutions, but clear and understandable reasons. It’s not just about maximum capacity, but also everyday practicality.

Can anyone share tips on how to effectively organize or access the less frequently used upper areas without having to climb a step ladder all the time? Are there suitable accessories specifically for Metod that make this easier?

I would like to offer a structured approach that considers both storage space and accessibility:

1. Prioritize storing frequently used items in middle and lower areas.
2. Use drawers and baskets at eye level to make access easier.
3. Store essential items for upper levels in lightweight containers.
4. Keep aids like folding step stools or pull-out steps handy inside cabinets.
5. Plan the cabinet height so that at least part of it remains easily reachable.

Additionally, there are accessories available, such as kitchen step ladders that can be stored compactly. This way, you can maximize space usage without sacrificing comfort.

Great addition by LOGEMIN! That's exactly how we do it too, and it works really well!

Storage space should not only be evaluated by volume but also by how enjoyable it is to use. 🙂 When a cabinet is easy to handle, organizing becomes much more fun!

Keep it up, this will be a fantastic project for you!
