Hello everyone, I have a problem with some drawers in my Ikea Hemnes dresser model. They don’t slide smoothly anymore. Sometimes they get stuck or can only be opened and closed with significant effort. I’ve tried carefully removing them and checking the runners, but they look fine visually. The drawers run on side-mounted metal or plastic tracks – sometimes metallic, sometimes with plastic guides. What’s frustrating is that the issue isn’t consistent: sometimes one side sticks, sometimes the other. I suspect the rollers might be worn down or the tracks could be bent. Has anyone had experience repairing these specific drawer slides on the Hemnes series? Are there any proven methods or tips to restore smooth operation without having to completely disassemble the drawer? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello Tabilen, I’m familiar with your issue with the Hemnes drawers, as several common wear points tend to appear in this Ikea model. Generally, the sliding system consists of two main parts: the fixed rail inside the cabinet and the sliding rail attached to the drawer bottom – usually made of metal with plastic rollers that can wear out over time. A systematic approach to troubleshooting would be:

- First, completely remove the drawer to thoroughly inspect both the mounting rails inside the furniture and the moving guides on the drawer itself.
- Check if the plastic rollers are worn down, broken, or bent. Such rollers can become deformed under additional load and no longer roll smoothly.
- If the rollers still look intact, carefully clean all rails and moving parts from dust, small wood chips, or trapped debris. A lint-free cloth and possibly a cloth dampened with isopropyl alcohol or spirits are helpful here.
- Inspect the rails for any deformations: bent metal parts can often be gently bent back into shape with light counterpressure (be careful!).
- Reinstall the drawer, making sure that the rail is properly connected to the drawer bottom at both the front and back, as misalignment can cause imbalance. Also, ensure the guides are not screwed in crookedly, as this can cause sticking.
- Another tip: a lubricant based on silicone or PTFE (no oil or grease) often improves smoothness; apply it sparingly to avoid attracting dirt.

I’d be interested to know whether the rails on your unit appear firmly screwed in or if they might need tightening? Also, whether the drawer still fits snugly without play, meaning it’s not misaligned due to material swelling or moisture? Depending on the age and usage, it might make sense to replace the entire sliding rail set – Ikea offers spare parts if you can’t resolve the issue.

Feel free to provide more details so we can take a more targeted look.

I agree with the very detailed post by Domau0 and would like to add:

- Often, the adjustment of the drawer inside the carcass is crucial. If the drawer sits too low or too high, the wheels can catch on the rails. Therefore, it’s best to completely remove the drawer, carefully check the runners on the sides, and make sure they are straight and properly secured.
- A proven trick for Hemnes drawers is to slightly lift the drawer while reinserting it to properly engage the rollers into the track.
- For cleaning, I recommend using a soft sponge with some mild dish soap to remove dirt and deposits, then make sure to dry these areas thoroughly.

If the drawers still stick after cleaning and inspection, replacing the rollers could be the next step, as this is often where the most wear occurs.

The most effective approach is to completely remove the track and the rollers and clean them. Then check the rollers for any damage. If they are worn out, purchase replacement rollers from Ikea and install them. Often, this is enough to resolve the problem.

This is a very useful tip, as Hemnes drawers are known for sometimes getting stuck due to slight misalignment of the rollers when being reinserted.

I would like to add here that not all replacement rollers are identical: Some Hemnes models use different types of tracks and rollers even within the same series. Therefore, it is important to check the exact model first or ideally compare the replacement rollers with the old ones.

Regarding lubrication: I recommend silicone grease or Teflon spray, as they adhere well, do not harden, and do not attract dust particles. Tip: Move the drawer back and forth several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

One small note: If the drawer is unusually difficult to open or close, it may be due to warping caused by moisture. Hemnes is made of solid wood parts, and slight expansion can cause the drawer sides to press against the frame.

If you can provide more details about the exact model and type of sliding mechanism, I can offer more precise advice.
