Hello everyone, I’m looking for good tips on cleaning Ikea Metod kitchen countertops. Specifically, I’m interested in how to clean the countertops properly and as gently as possible, without damaging them or leaving wear marks on the surface. I’m particularly concerned about the recommended cleaning products, how often to clean, and the best techniques to use. I have a light-colored countertop with a melamine-coated surface and want to avoid it becoming dull or unattractive over time. Does anyone have experience with this exact countertop or similar Ikea kitchen countertops? Thanks for any advice!

I find your question very understandable, especially when it comes to the Metod countertops, as I myself am a bit concerned about damaging them through incorrect cleaning. My experience is that mild cleaning agents work best. I usually use lukewarm water with a little dish soap and a microfiber cloth. It is important to wipe the surface gently and avoid abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners.

My main concern is about the recommended cleaning products, how often to clean, and which techniques are best.

I thoroughly clean our countertop about once a week, but for everyday use, simply wiping it with a damp cloth is usually sufficient. If there are stubborn stains like grease or dried-on residue, I use a little vinegar water, but only in small amounts.

So far, I haven’t had any issues with dullness as long as I didn’t scrub too hard.

When cleaning Ikea Metod kitchen countertops, it is important to keep in mind that the surface is melamine-coated, which makes it relatively resistant but also sensitive to aggressive chemicals. For proper care, I recommend the following points:
- Daily cleaning with a soft cloth and a mild dish soap and water mixture.
- Thorough cleaning every one to two weeks without using abrasive cleaners.
- Avoid products containing ammonia, bleach, or chlorine, as these can damage the surface.
- Treat stains preferably with a damp sponge and some solvent-free vinegar, but do not soak.
- After cleaning, wipe the surface dry to prevent water spots.

Avoiding abrasive cleaners and very strong solvents is essential, as they can cause scratches or dull areas.

This matches my experience as well.

I’m happy to share a few additional tips!

It is true that Metod countertops are melamine-coated, so gentle cleaning is especially important. In my experience, the following works well:

- Cleaning frequency: Clean regularly, preferably right after getting dirty, to avoid residues drying on.
- Cleaning agents: Use diluted dish soap with warm water; always choose mild products.
- Cloths: Microfiber cloths are ideal as they clean thoroughly and gently.
- Stains: For greasy residues, use diluted vinegar essence (about 1:5 with water) and then wipe well with clear water.
- Never use abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, as the surface is only thinly melamine-coated.

One more tip: If you ever get stains from hot pots or cutting boards, clean them quickly and then dry the surface, as heat can damage the coating.

Hope this helps!
