ᐅ How can IKEA Besta units be used for storage in a camper or caravan?

tokloHello everyone,
I am currently considering using the IKEA Besta system as a storage solution in a caravan.
My specific question is: How can the IKEA Besta system be best integrated into a caravan to make optimal use of available storage space, while ensuring stability and functionality, and at the same time adapting the relatively rigid furniture system to the often confined and mobile conditions inside a camper?
I imagine some modifications are necessary, for example due to securing it during travel and the limited space. Does anyone have practical experience or suggestions for modifying and using the Besta system under such conditions?
Thank you in advance!

I would especially firmly fix Besta to the floor or the wall in a caravan. That is definitely necessary, but I doubt that the IKEA modules are really sturdy enough without modifications if the vehicle is exposed to strong vibrations while on the road.
Does anyone know if the material can, for example, be reinforced, or if there are more stable alternatives within the IKEA range that are better suited?
Some time ago, I started a similar project and can share the following technical advice regarding the integration of Besta units in a caravan:
- First, you should precisely measure the interior dimensions of the caravan. Besta modules have fixed sizes; custom cutting of shelves or trimming the panels may be necessary for a perfect fit.
- To securely fix the module, I recommend combining metal angle brackets (e.g., L-shaped profiles) attached to the wall with non-slip gaskets between the module and the floor. These prevent shifting and reduce vibrations.
- The drawers and doors of the Besta system need additional locks to prevent them from opening while driving. Special camper locks are useful here.
- Since Besta material is mainly particleboard-based, moisture can be an issue. It is advisable to treat it with water-resistant coatings or films to protect against damage caused by fluctuations in humidity.
A question for you, toklo: What are the dimensions of your caravan, and how much room for movement do you have for storage furniture? This could strongly affect the planning.

One question for you, toklo: How large is your caravan and how much maneuvering space do you have for the storage furniture?Thank you for the detailed tips! My caravan is approximately 6 meters (20 feet) long and 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) wide.
For the storage solution, about 1.5 meters (5 feet) of wall length is available, where I would like to fit 2 Besta modules either side by side or stacked. The depth must not exceed 40 cm (16 inches) to avoid making the aisle too narrow.
I also do not want to do too much modification since the system should remain reversible—that is, easy to disassemble. The fastening methods and lockable doors are especially important to me.
What is your opinion on this? Despite the mobility aspect, are there ways to modify Besta so that the effort stays manageable?
I can understand that you want to keep it as flexible as possible.
A tip from my side: Instead of fixed screws, you could use clamping profiles, for example, which can be easily removed if you want to rebuild or adjust something. This minimizes the alterations to the trailer.
Regarding stability, rubber pads or anti-slip mats might help as well. They provide some cushioning against vibrations and won’t damage the furniture.
Do you intend to use the Besta system mainly as a drawer solution, or are open shelves also planned?
