Hello everyone,
I am currently considering using the IKEA Besta system as a storage solution in a caravan.
My specific question is: How can the IKEA Besta system be best integrated into a caravan to make optimal use of available storage space, while ensuring stability and functionality, and at the same time adapting the relatively rigid furniture system to the often confined and mobile conditions inside a camper?
I imagine some modifications are necessary, for example due to securing it during travel and the limited space. Does anyone have practical experience or suggestions for modifying and using the Besta system under such conditions?
Thank you in advance!

Regarding stability, rubber pads or anti-slip mats might help additionally.Exactly. Just put rubber mats underneath and screw brackets to the wall, that holds well. For doors, make small hooks with a catch so nothing rattles.
Locks can be equipped with additional camping latches, which IKEA does not offer. These are available at any hardware store, are easy to install, and secure doors and drawers against opening while driving.
Between the modules and the wall, I would also install foam strips to absorb movements.

Since Besta material is more particleboard-based, moisture is an issue. This raises an important point: especially in camper vehicles, there are often changing temperature and humidity conditions.
I see the risk that Besta panels may swell or warp, which could impair functionality over time.
Therefore, I would suggest treating all visible surfaces with a water-repellent coating or applying an additional protective layer before installation.
Are there any user experiences regarding how durable Besta is under such conditions?

Are there any user experiences on how durable Besta really is under such conditions? From my experience: Besta is not designed to withstand extreme humidity fluctuations. Even though the panels have a melamine coating, this does not reliably protect against moisture penetration at the edges and cut surfaces.
My advice to illustrate:
- Seal all cut edges with wood or plastic edge banding after trimming
- Treat with special waterproof PU (polyurethane) varnishes
- Ensure ventilation inside the camper to minimize condensation
If possible, consider using metal components (e.g., aluminum profiles) more extensively and use wood primarily as a decorative covering to help prevent material damage.
