kuse55Hello everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to equip Ikea Brimnes doors with a soft-close function. I am referring to the two doors of a Brimnes wardrobe, which unfortunately come standard without soft-close and often slam quite loudly when closing.
I have already considered whether standard dampers, like those used for regular cabinet doors, can simply be installed, or if there might be replacement hinges from Ikea or third-party suppliers that directly support soft-close.
Ideally, the installation should be possible without too much effort and without damaging the doors or the cabinet frame. Maybe someone here has experience or knows suitable solutions or tricks to retrofit this feature.
I would appreciate any tips or advice to help make the closing of the Brimnes doors quieter and smoother!

Yes, this is actually a common request for Ikea furniture. The Brimnes flip doors usually have basic hinges without any damping.
In most cases, you can retrofit so-called “soft-close dampers.” These are attached inside the frame – which generally works well with Brimnes because the doors are quite sturdy. Just a small pair of dampers that slow down the door when closing makes a big difference.
Just make sure the dampers are suitable for the door size and weight! Otherwise, the mechanism can become problematic.
Ikea itself does not offer soft-close hinges for Brimnes, so you’ll need to look for third-party options. If you’re handy, it’s a straightforward upgrade; if not, you might want to get some help.
Good luck – and don’t worry, it makes closing the doors really much smoother! 😉

The drilling locations should be planned in advance to avoid visible damage.
Alternatively, there are soft-close hinges with similar drilling dimensions as the original Ikea hinges, but the Brimnes model has a different design, so completely replacing the hinges often becomes problematic.
Therefore, I recommend retrofit dampers. They do not produce audible noise and can be removed later without any residue if needed.
A tip: Measure the doors’ dimensions and weight before purchasing to choose the appropriate dampers.

I have personally retrofitted Brimnes doors with small dampers that can be easily attached at least on the inside left side. The installation was straightforward for me without much tinkering, and the result is definitely quieter and more comfortable.
If you feel unsure, just take it slow and, if in doubt, ask someone from your circle of friends who has experience with furniture assembly.
It’s not a major procedure, but it does sometimes require a bit of patience. I hope it goes well for you!
