Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to customize my Pax wardrobe doors and have a few questions about the best approach. My idea is to modify the doors to better match my living style, possibly using paint, films, or even glass or mirror inserts. I am particularly interested in options that are not permanent, in case I want to redesign later. Additionally, I am wondering which materials and techniques are recommended to achieve durable and visually appealing results. Are there any special considerations to keep in mind with Pax doors, especially regarding the door mechanism when, for example, glass is used? I would appreciate any tips, step-by-step guides, or personal experiences! From your perspective, which customization options are the most practical and proven?

Hi, for PAX doors you can use films or magnetic wallpapers, which are easy to replace.
You can usually buy glass or mirrors directly from IKEA and swap out the doors.
You need to pay attention to the hardware if you want to use heavier materials, otherwise it may jam.

The individual customization of PAX doors can be accomplished in several steps. I recommend first removing the doors to gain better access for modifications. If you plan to use paint, thorough cleaning and light sanding of the surface are important to ensure good adhesion. Acrylic paints or lacquers designed for wood or MDF work well here, as they are durable and relatively easy to apply.

If you want to use adhesive films, make sure to clean the surface thoroughly before application and apply the films slowly to avoid air bubbles.

For glass or mirror inserts, pay attention to the thickness and weight. IKEA sometimes offers replacement glass doors for PAX equipped with special hinge technology. It is important that the hinge can handle the increased weight; otherwise, the doors may not close properly or could be damaged over time.

If you want to cut the glass yourself, you will need precise measurements and possibly rubber seals to install the glass without damage. You also have to adjust the hinge drillings exactly. This process can be more complex, so replacing them with original spare parts is often safer.

Longer-lasting results can also be achieved by applying sealants or clear coats over the paint to protect the surface from scratches.

I am interested in how much experience you have with DIY work and whether you have tools like a drill or sandpaper available?

That sums it up very well! Especially for glass or mirrored doors, I would recommend paying close attention to the hinge model and, if in doubt, adding reinforcements.

Besides hinges, you can also achieve a lot of individuality with handles or handle strips. Replacing them is straightforward and has a big impact on the overall look.

If you decide on a laminated finish, I suggest choosing a matte laminate. It hides minor imperfections better and looks more premium. If you opt for paint, test it first on an inconspicuous area to see how well it adheres and whether it is fully compatible with the material of the PAX door panel.

I once tried a combination of spray paint and handles with integrated lighting myself—the result was impressive, but you have to be careful that the doors do not become misaligned afterward. It really all comes down to the tight tolerances of the hinges.

Feel free to share if you have specific designs or styles in mind; then advice can be even more targeted.

I think it’s great that you’re putting so much thought into customizing your PAX doors! I especially like the fact that you can easily try out different options along the way, since sometimes you’re not sure if it will feel right in the end.

One good tip from my experience: you can simply attach fabric behind a glass door – this creates a soft, personal look. Of course, this requires glass doors and some crafting skills for fitting the fabric.

Sometimes there are also adhesive stickers in great designs that stick well to wood but can be removed without leaving residue – I once tried a pattern that I didn’t like at first, and I was able to remove it without having to repaint the entire door.

I know this sounds quite experimental at first, but with PAX, a bit of willingness to experiment really helps because the basic structure is solid.

Important: be careful not to choose any color changes that are greatly affected by temperature or humidity, as this can cause warping or blistering.

I wish you lots of fun with your project!

On precision and materials:

To ensure your PAX doors remain both custom and functional, carefully check the load capacity and fit. For glass or mirror fronts, which are heavier than the standard wooden doors, I strongly recommend reinforcing the door hinges and attachment points or switching to specialized models designed for such weights.

In many DIY projects, adjustments to hinges or door mounting are often neglected – this is critical, as the entire structure suffers as a result.

Regarding design: besides paint and veneers, I also suggest considering manual inlays or recessed panels if you have woodworking experience. This gives the surface depth that simple veneers or stickers cannot achieve.

If you are painting, use high-quality 2K paint or powder coating. These options may be more expensive but provide a durable finish that resists scratches and UV exposure.

Integrating indirect LED lighting along the door edges can also be interesting. It creates ambient lighting and highlights the custom design.

What are the exact dimensions of your doors? Does your cabinet use hinged doors, sliding doors, or folding doors?
