Giuseppi5622 Apr 2022 14:36Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Platsa shelving unit at home that my children use frequently and it gets quite a bit of wear and tear. Therefore, I’m wondering: what is the best way to clean Ikea PLATSA when children are involved, especially regarding stains, sticky residues, and possible scratches? I want to keep the furniture clean and treat it as gently as possible to ensure it lasts a long time and remains child-friendly. Are there any specific tips for cleaning the surface and the materials used that won’t affect the appearance or functionality? I’m looking forward to your experiences and advice.

For gentle cleaning of Ikea PLATSA with frequent use by children, I would recommend the following procedure:
- Step 1: Wipe surfaces with a lint-free, damp microfiber cloth using warm water.
- Step 2: For stained areas, use a mild dish soap applied to the cloth, not directly on the furniture.
- Step 3: Afterwards, wipe again with clean water to remove any residue.
- Step 4: Dry thoroughly to prevent moisture from seeping into the edges, especially on laminate surfaces.
Common mistakes include using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the finish. Excessive water can also affect stability, so always use it sparingly.
If adhesive residues from toys appear, I recommend gently dabbing a little isopropanol on a cloth, not directly on the surface. This effectively and gently removes sticky spots. For scratches, careful touch-up with a wax stick in a matching color usually helps, if available.

I want to treat the piece of furniture carefully and as gently as possible so that it lasts a long time and remains child-friendly.Great approach! Especially with children, it’s important to find a balance between thorough and gentle cleaning. From my experience, wiping it down with a damp cloth right away before dirt dries saves you from having to scrub hard.
Also, I often use a small spray bottle with a mixture of vinegar and water (50% water, 50% vinegar) for light disinfection and to remove limescale spots. Afterwards, make sure to dry it well to prevent moisture from settling into the PLATSA surface over time. And yes, this works really well for fingerprints and sticky fingers, especially after playing with food.
With this routine, our Ikea PLATSA has been well maintained for years and holds up very well even with little explorers in the household!

Typical mistakes include using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that can damage the finish.I can only confirm that. Especially in households with children, it is important to keep cleaning as safe and effective as possible.
Important: Ikea PLATSA is mostly made of melamine-coated particleboard. These are resistant to water and dirt but react sensitively to solvents and aggressive cleaners.
My recommendation: Do not use ammonia- or solvent-based cleaners. Instead, use a mild soapy solution, as mentioned above, and then wipe dry thoroughly.
Additionally, stains should be removed immediately, as they become harder to remove over time and can cause the surface to become dull or damaged in the long run.
One more tip: To protect against scratches, I recommend, if possible, attaching self-adhesive felt pads to the underside of items that are frequently moved on the surface (e.g., toys). This helps keep the panel intact for longer.
