Hello everyone,
I recently installed a kitchen with Ikea Metod fronts, some of which have glass panels. My question is: what is the best way to clean these glass fronts to avoid streaks while also protecting the surface materials and seals?
I want to proceed as gently as possible without using harsh chemical cleaners, as I’ve heard they can damage the coating or the frame over time. I’m also interested in whether there are any special cleaning products or home remedies that work particularly well.
Perhaps you also have tips on the proper cleaning technique—for example, which cloth or cleaning method is recommended to keep the glass fronts looking great in the long run. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey geonjan!
Great that you want to take good care of your Metod glass fronts – they really look fantastic when properly maintained! 😄 I usually just use clear water and a soft microfiber cloth, which prevents scratches and leaves no streaks. For stubborn stains, I add a few drops of mild dish soap to the water and gently clean the surface.
Very important: Do not use abrasive sponges or harsh cleaners! They can damage the glass coating and leave unattractive marks.
One more tip: After cleaning, always polish with a dry, lint-free cloth for a nice shine!
Give it a try, you’ll notice the difference! ✌️

For an objective addition: Ikea Metod glass fronts are made of single-pane safety glass (tempered glass) with specific frames and seals. Please note:
- Only use mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents. Harsh chemical cleaners (e.g., those containing ammonia or alcohol) can dry out seals and damage frame materials.
- Microfiber cloths are preferred as they do not cause scratches.
- For the glass surfaces, cleaning with water and a few drops of neutral dish soap is suitable.
- Never use window leather or paper towels, as they may leave lint or cause scratches.
- Avoid standing water in the frame area, as it can lead to damage or swelling.
Additionally, any cleaning residues should be completely removed to prevent streaks and deposits.

Use only mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents. This is a very important point! The pH level is crucial for how gentle the cleaning is. I also recommend drying the surfaces immediately after cleaning with dry microfiber cloths. This prevents limescale marks or streaks caused by evaporation.
In addition, cleaning should be done regularly – not too infrequently and not too often. If maintenance is neglected, dirt and grease build up, requiring more intensive cleaning and putting extra strain on the surface.

I want to proceed as gently as possible, without using harsh chemical cleanersThat sounds reasonable, but honestly, most of what’s marketed as “gentle” still involves chemicals in the end.
Why not just clean it properly if the surface is designed to handle that kind of treatment? I often think the idea of “gentle” cleaning is an excuse to avoid thorough cleaning.
Using a stronger cleaner every few weeks (e.g., glass cleaner with isopropanol) hasn’t damaged my frames or glass surfaces. The key is to wipe everything down thoroughly afterward so no residue remains.
But hey, everyone to their own—just don’t be too cautious!
