Hello everyone,

I recently wondered what really works effectively against dust buildup on IKEA Hemnes shelves. These shelves are quite popular due to their open shelving and sometimes dark wood, but I have a significant dust problem with them. I’m interested in your experiences with cleaning and preventing dust—both regarding specific materials or surface treatments that reduce dust adherence, and practical everyday routines. Are there any particular cleaning products you would recommend? Or any tricks to minimize dust accumulation over the long term without having to do a full cleaning all the time? I’m looking for tips that are easy and sustainable to apply in a private home setting.

Thanks in advance!

Hey!

A super important question – anyone who has Hemnes shelves knows the dust problem all too well! 😊

What helped me a lot is regularly wiping them down with a microfiber cloth. Instead of just dry dusting, I slightly dampen the cloth, which picks up the dust better without spreading it around. After that, I sometimes spray a small amount of furniture polish, which helps keep the dust away for a while!

Also: If your shelves are not always open, covering them (for example, with a decorative cloth or even glass/door elements) can significantly reduce dust buildup. This might not be possible for every shelf, but with Hemnes there are also versions with doors.

Give it a try, you can do it! Dust will never completely disappear, but with some routine, you can really cut down the effort 🙂

Yes, I completely agree! Open shelves are a dust magnet deluxe 😅

I happen to have Hemnes too and use small indoor plants – they actually help a bit, but they’re no miracle cure. It’s important not to wipe too aggressively with dry cloths. Dust tends to stick more that way. A slightly damp cloth is best. And a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment – a real friend!

My tip for everyone: It’s better to use the vacuum more often rather than just opening the window; that cleans the air and reduces dust in the home.

Hope this makes things a little easier for you!

Hello,

for IKEA Hemnes shelves, regular wiping with a damp microfiber cloth helps. Don’t forget to vacuum first. It’s best to use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery brush to avoid scratches.

Try to arrange books and decorations so that air can circulate well; this prevents too much dust from settling.

To control dust buildup on Hemnes shelving units, I recommend the following approach:

- Use anti-static furniture care products that seal the surface and reduce dust adhesion
- Wipe the surface daily or at least weekly with a slightly damp microfiber cloth
- Install doors on open shelves (IKEA offers suitable glass doors for Hemnes), preventing dust from coming into direct contact with the surface
- Regularly vacuum the immediate surroundings to minimize sources of dust particles

Additionally, it is advisable to maintain consistent indoor humidity levels (around 40-60%) as dry air tends to stir up more dust.

These measures are based on data and have proven especially effective in households with open-pored wood.

I would like to add the following:

- Dust particles settle more quickly on rough or porous surfaces. The Hemnes fronts made of painted pine wood are moderately porous, so avoid using oil-based care products.
- Furniture wax or silicone-based cleaners can leave residues and tend to attract more dust.
- The best option for Hemnes is a neutral furniture cleaner used together with microfiber cloths.
- For deeper gaps, antistatic microfiber dusters or a brush with soft bristles are helpful.

This way, dust control can be systematically improved.
