Hello everyone,

I have been having a problem for some time with one of my IKEA Metod kitchen drawers making a loud squeaking noise when I open or close it. The drawer is relatively new, installed about six months ago. The squeaking sounds like it’s coming from the drawer slides, which in Metod kitchens are often metal or ball-bearing runners. I’ve already tried cleaning the slides lightly, but without any success.

My question is: How can I effectively fix a squeaking IKEA Metod drawer? Are there any specific products or methods that have proven to work? Should the slides be lubricated, replaced, or is there another common cause for this issue? I want to avoid buying unnecessary parts or risking damage to the drawer.

Thanks for your help!

Hello fexhulio,

Regarding the topic "How do I fix a squeaking IKEA Metod drawer?" I would like to explain the possible causes and solutions in more detail.

First, it is important to locate the exact source of the squeaking. Metod drawers usually have metal or ball-bearing slides, which can rub slightly if small debris or dust gets trapped. My recommendation for diagnosis:

- Fully pull out the drawer and clean the slides with a small brush or compressed air to remove dust residues.
- Check if the plastic rollers, often found on the drawer slides, are still intact and not brittle or broken.
- Even slight play between the slide and the roller can cause friction.

If mechanical cleaning does not help, I recommend treating the metal parts with a suitable lubricant. It is important to use a lubricant that is neither sticky nor attracts dust. I personally use Teflon spray or WD-40 Specialist Dry PTFE Lube. Simply spray a little, then open and close the drawer several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

If the squeaking continues, replacing the slides may be necessary—wear on the rollers or guide rails is often the cause.

A side question: Do you have a push-to-open function or soft-close mechanism on your drawer? These components can also produce noise.

I hope these tips help you. If needed, I can also provide advice on how to dismantle the slides.

Hello,

first try to clean the running rails thoroughly and then lubricate them with silicone spray or Teflon oil. Greasy lubricants are not suitable as they attract dust.

If that doesn’t help, the rollers might be damaged and you may need to replace the rails.

That is already a very good approach to understand the cause and fix it directly.

To make it a bit clearer and more systematic for everyone who wants to proceed more thoroughly, here is my step-by-step suggestion:

- First, completely remove the drawer; check the side rails, as there are usually releases to unlock it.
- Visual inspection: Are there dirt or old grease residues on the sliding rails? Over time, these can turn into a sticky layer.
- Clean with a dry cloth or some compressed air.
- Now check the track path: Are all plastic rollers or guides clean and intact? Cracks or missing wheels should be replaced immediately.
- For lubrication, definitely use Teflon or silicone spray, not regular oils or greases. These quickly attract dust and can make the problem worse.
- After lubricating, open and close fully several times so the lubricant spreads evenly.
- If the creaking continues, consider replacing the rails, as they may also be bent.

A common mistake I see often: using cheap oils or grease. This causes the sliding rail to become even dirtier more quickly.

One more request: please check whether the drawer is installed and aligned properly. A misaligned drawer slide can also cause noise.

Hope this helps everyone struggling with such a squeaky problem.

I can only agree! 🙂

I had the same annoying squeaking with my Metod drawer – after a quick cleaning and a good spray of silicone oil, it was quiet again. Important: don’t use heavy grease, as that can make things worse over time.

A little tip from me: shortly after lubricating, wipe off any excess lubricant with a damp cloth to prevent drips on the kitchen floor.

Good luck! And remember to realistically consider if the drawer might be loaded beyond its intended capacity. Overfilling can also cause more friction in the long run.
