Hello everyone,

I am planning to set up our Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets in an area accessible to children. My question is: how can I arrange the Metod cabinets in a safe and child-friendly way so that our little ones cannot reach dangerous or fragile items, but can still independently access things suitable for them? I would appreciate tips on organizing the interior, securing the cabinets to prevent tipping, and dealing with sharp edges or materials that may not yet be childproof. Maybe someone has experience with child-safe modifications or suitable accessories that work well with the Metod units?

I look forward to your suggestions and advice.

What I like about the Metod cabinets is that many of the components are modular, and you can work well with the matching shelves and boxes. To keep things child-friendly, I equipped the lowest drawers and compartments with colorful storage bins that are sturdy enough to be dropped occasionally without breaking.

Regarding safety: I use door stoppers and corner protectors everywhere, which really helps reduce risks. Although the edges of the Metod units are usually well finished, a bit of extra protection doesn’t hurt.

I have also made it a habit to fit rarely used cabinets with lockable child safety locks. This way, the children still enjoy taking things out and putting them away without having access to sharp knives or cleaning products.

If anyone has recommendations for affordable but durable magnetic child safety locks, I’d be happy to hear them.

I have had good experience with the "Safety 1st" magnetic cabinet lock. It can be installed without drilling, and the magnetic release works reliably while holding tight. The product is priced in the moderate range.

Also recommended are "Dreambaby" locks, which are sometimes attached using adhesive pads. It is important to ensure that the locks are not too easy to bypass, but can still be quickly opened by adults in an emergency.

When choosing safety devices, it is also important to consider that they are suitable for the cabinet materials: Metod has smooth, melamine-coated surfaces that bond well with adhesive strips without causing permanent damage.
