Hello everyone,

I have Ikea PAX wardrobes at home with wooden doors. Since these doors look very nice, I want to keep them in good condition for as long as possible. My question is: How do I properly and sustainably care for Ikea PAX wooden doors?

Specifically, I’m interested in which cleaning products or maintenance methods are suitable to avoid damaging the surface or causing unintended changes. It would also be helpful to know how to treat small scratches and whether there are any special care intervals for the wooden surfaces.

I’m hoping for practical tips that relate specifically to the Ikea PAX models, as I’ve heard the surfaces are not always comparable to traditional wood finishes. Thank you in advance!

For cleaning the Ikea PAX wood doors, I recommend using a soft, damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents or abrasive materials, as they can damage the surface. Minor scratches can be repaired with furniture wax or special touch-up pens available at hardware stores.

For the care of Ikea PAX wooden doors, I recommend the following:

- Avoid aggressive cleaners such as ammonia or alcohol, as they can damage the sealant.
- Use mild soapy cloths or special wood care wipes that protect the surface.
- For treating scratches: a light polish with wood care oil, which also highlights the grain.
- Clean only with a lightly damp cloth and dry immediately to prevent water stains.
- For regular maintenance, cleaning every 1–2 weeks is usually sufficient, depending on usage.

The surfaces of the PAX doors are often made of coated wood-based materials, so oil-based care products should be avoided if the surface is lacquered.

Great topic! I love my PAX doors and had similar questions. 😊

My advice: I used a mild soapy solution (dish soap with water), which usually works well. Then wipe down and dry thoroughly. For minor scratches, I sometimes use beeswax; it works wonders and protects the surface.

Another important point: Avoid excessive moisture – the doors don’t like that at all! If you keep this in mind, everything will stay looking good for a long time. So stick with it and don’t use too many chemicals!

Noix45, to answer your question thoroughly: Ikea PAX wood doors are usually coated with melamine resin or lacquer. This means they do not have a solid wood surface, so their care requirements differ from those of real wood.

For cleaning, I recommend:

- A soft microfiber cloth without abrasive effect
- Lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap solution
- Avoid harsh cleaners or scouring agents, as these can damage the coating

For minor scratches, there are special repair kits designed for melamine-coated furniture. Simply carefully touch up small chips or scratches.

Also, avoid using oil- or wax-based care products, as these have no effect on the surface and can become sticky.

Regular maintenance means cleaning as needed—usually once a month is enough, but if the doors are used heavily, clean more often.

I agree with this. It is important to know that the Ikea PAX wooden doors are made of MDF or particleboard with a decorative foil or melamine coating. Therefore, they are sensitive to greasy substances.

For a long-lasting solution, moisture should also be avoided to prevent the engineered wood from swelling. Cleaning with a slightly damp cloth followed by drying is the proper method.
