Hello everyone, I have an issue with my new IKEA Hemnes cabinet where the doors rub against the edges of the cabinet frame. The doors do close, but when opening or closing, there is a noticeable scratching noise that probably won’t be good for the material in the long run. My cabinet is placed flush against the wall, the doors are installed correctly according to the instructions, but I suspect that the wood or the fittings might be slightly warped or that the adjustment options were not fully utilized. What practical steps can I take to fix this rubbing without damaging the doors or the cabinet? Has anyone had experience with the Hemnes model and can offer advice on properly adjusting the doors or whether it’s advisable to use sandpaper for fine-tuning? I look forward to helpful answers, thank you!

Joana, great that you brought up this topic here! I had exactly the same problem – the doors were scraping so much at the bottom edge that I was almost desperate after work in the evening. 🙈

What really helped me:
- Completely loosen the hinges
- Slightly adjust the door and still install it so nothing scrapes
- Attach small felt pads under the cabinet, which raise it slightly and prevent scraping

Just give it a try, it can really work wonders! It’s worth it 😊

This is a simple and often underestimated solution. Easy, quick, and inexpensive.

Hello Joana, I would like to add that you should definitely take your time when making adjustments, so you can systematically try all the adjustment screws on the hinges.

It is also important to repeatedly open and close the doors fully to find the point where they no longer rub.

If you need to compensate for warped floors or cabinet carcasses, installing small shims on the back of the cabinet could be an option to slightly correct the angle. But be sure to pay attention to stability!

That’s a very good tip! One more suggestion from me: If you find handling too complicated, you could try attaching the doors first without the handle screws and do the adjustment work. When screwing on the handles, some tension can occur, which may cause rubbing.

Thank you all for the many tips and suggestions!

Today I measured the cabinet carefully again and found that the floor is not completely level and the cabinet is not perfectly vertical. Therefore, I will start by adjusting the hinges, as they allow the best fine-tuning, and at the same time try to stick small felt pads under the feet.

I want to avoid making any alterations to the wood because I feel that could affect the original surface and the warranty. I will get back to you after I have tried these measures!
