Hello everyone,
I recently bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and assembled it in the usual way by screwing it together. I noticed that the nail heads on the back panel – the small metal pins that hold the backboard in place – are quite prominently visible. This bothers me visually because I have the shelf in an open space where the back panel is clearly visible.
My question to you: Is it normal for KALLAX that the nail heads stick out so much and are so noticeable? Are there ways to better conceal or cover them visually without compromising the stability? I would appreciate practical tips and experiences on what you do in such cases to make the back look neater.
Thank you in advance!

that the nail heads on the back panel ... are quite clearly visibleHey, unfortunately that’s often the case with IKEA shelves, especially with KALLAX. The nails are there to hold the back panel in place – after all, the shelf needs to stay together ;-).
A simple trick: you can carefully cover the nail heads with a small wooden or cork patch. There are so-called self-adhesive furniture pads or round felt gliders that you can use exactly for this purpose. They conceal the metal heads and also protect the back panel.
Additionally, you can cover the back panel with fabric or wallpaper scraps, which makes it look much cozier. 🙂 Just be a bit creative, and it hardly stands out anymore!

For a better appearance, I recommend:
1. Using self-adhesive caps specifically designed for nail heads (available at hardware stores).
2. Optionally attaching a thin decorative panel (MDF, veneer) behind the back panel to completely hide the nail heads.
3. Alternatively, replacing the back panel with a painted or printed panel in a matching color, as long as the shelf is not altered later for stability reasons.
These measures do not affect load-bearing capacity as long as the back panel remains securely fixed. However, I do not recommend completely removing the nails, as the structure would no longer be stable.

And while you’re at it, you can also spruce up the back panel with some self-adhesive decorative paper. I tried it once, and the whole shelf instantly got a friendlier look :-)
Sometimes it’s the little details that make all the difference!

Are there ways to visually conceal or cover this better without compromising stability?Hi, I had exactly the same problem with a KALLAX in my living room. I was initially bothered by the visible nail heads, but I simply stretched some fabric behind the back panel and secured it with small tool-free clips. It looks quite elegant and completely hides the metal heads.
This way, the shelf remains stable, and the fabric also creates a cozy atmosphere. Additionally, you can easily change the fabric depending on the season or mood, which makes the look flexible.
It might sound like a small DIY fix, but I really think the result is great and quick to do. 🙂 Maybe it’s something for you too?
