Hello everyone,

I would like to start a discussion on the topic "How can the Ikea Hemnes desk be optimally adapted for a home office?" Although the Hemnes has a nice design, it was originally intended as a classic desk, so I find it lacks some functional aspects that are important for efficient home office work today.

In particular, I am interested in ideas on how to add practical features to the Hemnes, such as cable management, additional storage for tech equipment, ergonomic adjustments, and maybe even small DIY modifications that make the desk better suited for longer working hours and modern work tools.

Are there any best practices, DIY tips, or experiences you can share on how to ideally customize the Hemnes as a home office workstation? I look forward to your suggestions, whether they are technical recommendations or creative modifications.

I installed a small shelf on the left side of the Hemnes for folders. This significantly increases the storage space without overcrowding the desk.

To efficiently convert the Ikea Hemnes desk for a home office setup, I recommend the following specific measures:

- Install a cable management channel under the desktop to keep cables organized and out of sight. Aluminum cable ducts with adhesive or screw mounting are advisable.

- Add modular storage solutions such as mobile pedestal drawers or side compartments to store office supplies neatly and keep them easily accessible.

- Use an external monitor arm to adjust the screen height flexibly, helping to reduce neck strain.

- Employ ergonomic peripherals like keyboard and mouse placed off the desktop to promote a healthy sitting posture.

- Optionally, attach a back panel with an integrated power strip and USB hubs to manage power supply and connections centrally and neatly.

Careful planning of mounting points is important during modifications to avoid compromising the stability of the Hemnes desk.

I can confirm that. I did it that way, and it really helps with tidying up and creates more space on the table.

A tip from experience: If you use a larger keyboard, use an under-desk keyboard tray. It fits well under the Hemnes and creates more desk space for other items.

Thanks to everyone for the valuable tips so far! I find the idea of a back panel that also serves as a tech organizer particularly interesting. I am considering whether it’s possible to create this myself using a thin MDF board with cable pass-throughs. Does anyone have experience with the recommended board thickness or screws to ensure the panel remains stable without taking up too much space? Or are there alternative mounting suggestions?
