Hello everyone,

I have an issue with my IKEA BILLY cabinet doors. They don’t close properly; instead, they are slightly misaligned and sometimes stick at the top edge. I’ve noticed that the doors can apparently be adjusted, but I find the instructions not very detailed.

What exactly should be done in a case where the BILLY doors close unevenly? Is there a specific trick or a certain sequence to optimally adjust the hinges?

I have basic furniture assembly skills, can use a screwdriver, and have a spirit level, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hi,

usually, you can adjust the hinges at the top and the side by turning the screws. Most BILLY doors have three adjustment screws: one for height, one for the distance to the cabinet wall, and one for the lateral alignment.

Try the side adjustment first, then the height. This should fix any misalignment.

Hello,

I would like to explain the adjustment of the BILLY doors in more detail, as it is often misunderstood.

The hinges typically have three adjustment points, as mentioned before:
1) The side adjustment screw moves the door closer to or further away from the cabinet. If the door is hanging crooked, this screw is often overtightened or too loose.
2) The height can usually be adjusted by moving the hinge plate. Be careful—if you completely loosen this screw, the door can easily be taken off.
3) The depth, meaning how flush the door sits against the furniture, can usually be adjusted with a separate screw.

My advice: Take your time to carefully adjust each screw and check the alignment with a spirit level after every small adjustment. Proceed millimeter by millimeter and open and close the door several times in between to assess its behavior.

If it still sticks after a few minutes, check whether the hinge itself is installed correctly. Sometimes the issue is that the furniture is standing on an uneven floor—in that case, you should adjust the adjustable feet.

Good luck!

That certainly makes sense, although I’m skeptical whether it’s always just the screws. With some BILLY shelves, the wood might not be perfectly straight or may warp slightly due to moisture – and adjusting screws can only compensate for that to a limited extent.

I agree with that, but I would add that it’s best to first check whether the initial installation was done without misaligned hinges. Sometimes the issue isn’t with the adjustment but with incorrectly drilled screws or a warped base.

In my opinion, it’s worth conducting a more detailed analysis here before turning screws blindly, as you could otherwise make the problem more complicated than necessary.

Hey everyone 🙂

I had the same problem last year with my BILLY doors, and what helped me a lot was to use a small wooden wedge to level the bottom of the shelf slightly, in case the floor is uneven. Then I carefully adjusted the screws, and voilà – no more doors closing crooked!

That’s absolutely true, environmental conditions make a big difference. I definitely wouldn’t apply too much force; it’s better to try step by step. And in the end, always look at the result with a smile 🙂

Good luck to you all!
