GU-DANIE6225 May 2021 14:32Hello everyone,
I am currently planning a new wardrobe system and a question came up: Are there IKEA PAX wardrobes available in different depths? Specifically, I am interested in whether it is possible to choose between different depths when selecting the PAX system to better fit the wardrobe design to various room layouts.
I have seen that the widths vary, but it is not clear to me if there are also different depths. If so, how extensive are these differences, and how do they affect the interior space and possible usage? Are there perhaps special components that allow flexible adjustment of the depth?
I would appreciate any experience and expert answers, especially from people who have customized a PAX system to fit their space.
Best regards!

Hi!
Regarding your question about whether IKEA PAX wardrobes come in different depths: yes, they do, and that’s actually quite practical. 🙂
IKEA basically offers two standard depths for PAX wardrobes – 35 cm (14 inches) and 58 cm (23 inches). This means you can choose a shallower model that fits well as a hallway closet or against a wall, or a deeper wardrobe that provides more storage space for hanging clothes or larger items.
The depth of the wardrobe also affects the internal layout, such as drawers, hanging rods, and shelves. With the shallower model, the hooks are closer to the wall, which means there is less space for bulky jackets or clothes on hangers.
So you’re on the right track by considering different depths in your planning, as this lets you make the best use of the space without the wardrobe looking too bulky. Hope this helps!

Hello,
I can confirm what kaju67 said: IKEA’s PAX series is generally offered in two depths:
- 35 cm (14 inches) deep, suitable for narrower wall recesses, hallways, or small rooms
- 58 cm (23 inches) deep, which works well for bedrooms as it provides enough space for hangers and larger items
The different depths allow for flexible room design, depending on whether you prioritize storage capacity or space-saving. The interior fittings (such as clothes rails, drawers, shelves) are adjusted accordingly.
If you plan to place several wardrobes in a row or combine the system with interior organizers like drawer inserts, you should pay close attention to the chosen depth to ensure everything fits together.
If you have more specific questions about assembling or installing the different depths, just let me know!

IKEA bietet grundsätzlich zwei Standardtiefen für PAX Schränke an - nämlich 35 cm und 58 cm.

A brief addition:
Yes, there are different depths for PAX. Two standard sizes are: 35 cm (14 inches) and 58 cm (23 inches).
35 cm (14 inches) is ideal for smaller rooms and hallways;
58 cm (23 inches) is better suited for hanging clothes and providing more storage space.
Both depths can be combined well when placing multiple modules side by side.

In addition to the depths already mentioned, I would like to point out that IKEA PAX wardrobes are mainly offered in two different depths:
- 35 cm (14 inches) depth: This is often designed for narrow spaces and is sometimes playfully called "hallway depth." It is especially suitable when space is limited and you want to store items that are not very bulky.
- 58 cm (23 inches) depth: This is the standard depth for bedrooms, as it provides enough space to hang clothes on hangers.
It is important to consider the depth when choosing doors as well. Both sliding doors and hinged doors have different space requirements outside the wardrobe.
Furthermore, IKEA does not officially offer larger or smaller depth options for the PAX system, but the depth can be somewhat flexibly adjusted using certain interior fittings and combinations of elements.
So yes, there are two depths. For special room situations, custom solutions can also be tried, although these are not standard offerings from IKEA.
