Hello everyone, I recently assembled several IKEA Hemnes cabinets that I frequently use in the living area. I noticed that the doors sometimes close quite loudly and squeak, especially when shut a bit forcefully. I would like to know if there are any known tips or measures to make opening and closing these cabinets noticeably quieter. I’m not looking for general furniture care advice but specifically for small adjustments or aids that can help reduce noises like creaking, squeaking, or loud slamming. Perhaps someone has practical experience or suggestions that apply specifically to the HEMNES series or similar wooden furniture with hinged doors? I look forward to your tips and advice.

Hello, the most effective solution is usually to readjust the hinges and then apply some silicone spray or furniture wax to them. This typically reduces the noise significantly.

The cause of loud closing noises in HEMNES cabinets is often related to the type of shelves used and the door construction. For quieter operation, I recommend the following: - Check that screws on hinges and shelves are securely tightened; loose components cause vibrations. - Apply felt or foam rubber strips at the contact points between the doors and the inside of the cabinet body. - Replace the standard hinges with soft-close hinges if quiet operation is a priority. These measures are technically sound and sustainably improve the closing behavior.

I consider this to be the most effective step, as mechanical noises mainly result from hard impact contacts. However, it is important to ensure the material is not too thick so that the doors can still close properly. I have tried different thicknesses myself and recommend lightweight felt pads that can be easily cut to size and glued in the appropriate spots.

As an addition: Regularly checking the door hinges for any dirt helps ensure smoother opening and closing. Dust or debris in the joints can cause noises.

Another option I recommend is retrofitting so-called door dampers (soft-close mechanisms) on the HEMNES cabinets. These are available either as retrofit modules or as replacements for the existing hinges. They ensure that the door closes slowly and quietly but require a certain amount of installation effort. Advantage: significant noise reduction and prevention of excessive slamming.
