Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble the Ikea Hemnes wardrobe soon and would like to know which assembly aids are truly helpful to make the process efficient and as stress-free as possible. What tools or accessories have worked well for you? I’m particularly wondering if additional screwdrivers, cordless drills, angle guides, or even glue are useful, although Ikea generally simplifies everything with pre-made parts and hardware. It would be great if you could also share your experiences and tips regarding common pitfalls. Thanks in advance!
Summary of Essential Assembly Tools for the Ikea Hemnes Wardrobe:
- Cordless drill with torque control
- Phillips screwdriver (PH2)
- Rubber mallet
- Carpenter’s square or spirit level
- Clamps for stabilization during solo assembly
Using glue is generally not necessary and can make disassembly more difficult. It is important not to overtighten screws to avoid damaging the material. When assembling the doors, ensure they are aligned parallel so that hinges and door closing mechanisms work properly.

I wonder, though, if you’re assembling the cabinet on your own? That’s an important point raised by benonon. Assembling the Hemnes alone is doable, but having a second person makes handling doors or heavy components much easier. If that’s not possible, clamps are very helpful to temporarily hold parts in place. This allows better control over the work and helps minimize mistakes.
After reconsidering and assembling the Hemnes model several times, I would like to add the following:
If you want a specific tool for more efficient assembly, “assembly wedges” or “wooden shims” can be useful. They help push the front and back panels apart when fixing them in place and make fitting large components easier.
Also:
- Work on a flat, clean surface to avoid scratches.
- Avoid over-tightening furniture connectors, such as cam lock fasteners, as they are made of plastic and can break if too much torque is applied.
I wonder if you have any special questions about door installation or aligning the drawers, as these are often tricky.

If there are alignment issues, I always recommend not tightening the hinges completely at first, but only after the final adjustment, so the position can still be changed. The small angle guides are really invaluable here.
