Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my new kitchen with IKEA Metod tall cabinets and want to make the most efficient use of the storage space. I have some experience with the planning software, but especially with the tall cabinets, I feel that you can gain significantly more storage by cleverly combining the right accessories.

I’m interested in how you specifically design the interior layout of Metod tall cabinets to use the storage space as efficiently and clearly as possible.

For example:
- What inserts, baskets, and boxes do you use?
- Do you prefer drawers or shelves with storage boxes?
- Are there any proven tips for installation to prevent things from getting lost (e.g., slipping, unused corners)?
- How do you combine shelves and pull-out interiors in tall cabinets, which are often quite deep?

I look forward to your experiences and concrete recommendations so I can purchase and install the accessories accordingly.

Minimizing odors can be effectively achieved by sealing the containers and regular ventilation – though the kitchen’s indoor climate can also play a role.

In my opinion, sealing food storage containers in tall cabinets is not always the best approach. Especially for dry goods, some air exchange is necessary; otherwise, unpleasant smells and even moisture problems can develop quickly. Airtight containers are more suitable for particularly strong-smelling foods or items with high moisture content.

Also, I find that many IKEA containers are not necessarily visually appealing for open shelving – in such cases, it’s better to use attractive storage jars.

One more thing I’m curious about: How do you handle the issue of tall, often dark cabinets? Do you use interior lighting, or do you plan other solutions so you don’t have to rely on a flashlight all the time?

That’s a very good question. For me, the lighting inside tall cabinets is often an issue. I was thinking about installing small LED strips, either sensor-activated or switch-controlled via the door—but this is not officially supported with IKEA Metod accessories.

Do you have any tips or experiences with good solutions—possibly even outside of IKEA accessories?

Small LED strips with PIR sensors that automatically turn on when the door opens are perfect for tall cabinets. When installing, make sure the strips are mounted as flush as possible and the cables are neatly managed to avoid obstructing the doors. These flexible adhesive strips are also ideal.

Another option is battery-operated LED puck lights that can be clipped inside at the top. While not as sleek as integrated solutions, they are very easy to install and flexible in placement.

One more tip: if you use shelves instead of pull-outs, targeted lighting in the back corners can be useful.

How did you size the tall cabinet? Width, height?

You’re right, ottilie. For most dry foods, I prefer transparent storage jars or containers with lids that aren’t completely airtight. This way, you can easily monitor the contents, and the food stays fresh longer.

Regarding interior lighting: I installed LED strips in a tall cabinet, which can be switched on either at the door frame or inside. With deeper cabinets, this really makes handling much easier.

As for accessories, I would add: the combination of racks and plastic inserts offered by IKEA is worth it for small items, especially cutlery and kitchen tools. Very sturdy and reliable.
