Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my new kitchen with IKEA Metod tall cabinets and want to make the most efficient use of the storage space. I have some experience with the planning software, but especially with the tall cabinets, I feel that you can gain significantly more storage by cleverly combining the right accessories.

I’m interested in how you specifically design the interior layout of Metod tall cabinets to use the storage space as efficiently and clearly as possible.

For example:
- What inserts, baskets, and boxes do you use?
- Do you prefer drawers or shelves with storage boxes?
- Are there any proven tips for installation to prevent things from getting lost (e.g., slipping, unused corners)?
- How do you combine shelves and pull-out interiors in tall cabinets, which are often quite deep?

I look forward to your experiences and concrete recommendations so I can purchase and install the accessories accordingly.

For Metod tall cabinets, I almost exclusively use fully extendable drawers and internal pull-outs. This way, you can see the entire depth of the cabinet and nothing gets overlooked. Additionally, inserts for cutlery and small items fit well into drawers. Shelves are usually impractical in deep cabinets because items tend to get lost at the back.

Hello pinben,

your question about the optimal use of storage space in METOD tall cabinets with accessories is very interesting and can vary greatly depending on the cabinet size and usage. I will address a few details:

1. Full-extension drawers versus shelves: Full-extension drawers offer clear advantages because they provide easier access to every item. For deeper tall cabinets (e.g., 60 cm (24 inches)), I recommend at least two to three levels of full-extension drawers, possibly with different heights to accommodate items of various sizes.

2. Interior organizers: IKEA offers various VARIERA organizers for drawers and baskets that are very helpful. Especially the tall wire baskets allow storage of bulkier items like pots and pans while keeping everything visible.

3. Sophisticated dividers from the accessories can also be helpful, especially in tall cabinets, to better use vertical storage space and organize the contents. Storage boxes in different sizes also help protect against dust.

4. Have you already considered a wide tall cabinet variant? For particularly wide cabinets, a combination of doors with external shelves plus internal drawers might be worthwhile.

One more question: What exactly do you want to store in the tall cabinets? Food, pots, supplies? Then I could offer more targeted advice.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

I mainly want to store food in the tall cabinets, both dry goods and some larger storage containers. Additionally, the lower section should have space for kitchen appliances that I don’t use every day (e.g., blender, casserole dishes).

Therefore, I was thinking of using open or well-sealable shelves with doors at the top and drawers in the lower part for the appliances.

Do you have experience with suitable accessories to minimize dirt and odors when storing food? Are the IKEA storage boxes effective for this purpose?

Also, what is the most practical drawer layout in the lower section for bulky appliances?

Hello pinben,

your plan sounds reasonable. For food storage, the VARIERA boxes with lids are especially suitable because they are airtight and stack well. They protect against dust and moisture, and the contents are quite visible.

For the lower drawers, where larger kitchen appliances will be stored, you should opt for sturdy, deep drawers. The METOD drawer system with insert trays and non-slip mats is recommended. This way, the appliances won’t slide around when opening.

Additionally, the firmer drawer bottoms offer better protection for the appliances in the lower drawers, and the non-slip coating means you don’t have to rearrange everything every time. You can also organize the space yourself using adjustable dividers depending on the size of your appliances.

Minimizing odors can be effectively achieved by sealing the boxes and regular ventilation — though the overall kitchen climate can also play a role.

For food storage in Metod tall cabinets, baskets with lids are very practical. Wire baskets are especially recommended because they allow air circulation, reducing mold and odors. They also fit well in the drawers. For heavy kitchen appliances, you should choose sturdy drawers with a high load capacity.
