Hello everyone,

I have had a KALLAX shelf from IKEA for some time now, which I mounted on my living room wall. Unfortunately, I notice that it doesn’t sit completely flush against the wall – it seems to tilt slightly forward at the bottom, even though I fixed it with anchors and screws. The wall and floor are level, I’m pretty sure of that. I wonder if this is due to the design of the shelf itself or if I made a mistake while attaching or leveling it. Does anyone have tips on how to mount my KALLAX securely and flush against the wall so that it doesn’t wobble or lean? Maybe there are special anchors or mounting aids that IKEA doesn’t include?

I appreciate any help and experiences you can share, as I want to avoid the shelf warping further over time or getting damaged. Thanks in advance!

Hey Konradlu, that’s awesome that you want to mount your KALLAX on the wall! 🙂 I had the exact same issue—my shelf wasn’t completely level at first. What helped me was sticking small, thin felt pads between the bottom shelf and the floor. This evens out the gap at the front and makes the shelf really stable!

Also, check if your screws are going deep enough into the wall and if you’re using the right wall anchors—sometimes the ones from the IKEA set aren’t ideal for all wall types. If you have a drywall (plasterboard) wall, a metal hollow wall anchor can work wonders! Good luck, fingers crossed :-)

That’s a good tip! I’d like to add that the KALLAX shelf can sometimes have slight warping due to its material (particleboard with veneer). My suggestion is to first make sure the shelf is completely level using a spirit level, not only relative to the wall but also with regard to the floor. Small unevenness in the floor can cause the entire shelf to wobble sideways.

It is also important to carefully check the wall mounting: Did you use the pre-drilled holes or make your own? Incorrect drilling can prevent screws from holding properly. Be sure to use suitable wall plugs – different ones are needed for concrete walls than for drywall (plasterboard) walls. Sometimes choosing the right type of wall plug is crucial for stability.

If the shelf still wobbles despite all these measures, an additional angle brace inside the shelf unit could be installed for reinforcement. Don’t worry, this doesn’t have to be a visible modification – small wooden corner braces screwed inside from the corner downward significantly improve stability.

I find it interesting how many different reasons there can be for furniture not being perfectly level.

The KALLAX series is known for its stability, at least on level floors. The difficulty often lies in hidden unevenness, which can easily be overlooked, whether caused by the flooring or slight wall deformations.

I would also critically check whether the wall is truly straight. Especially older buildings often have slight bulges. Have you measured with a long spirit level or a laser level?

Additionally, the IKEA assembly instructions might have been incomplete or misunderstood – a second look is worthwhile. Did you install the shelves correctly? They actually contribute to the overall stability.

I also wonder if you used L-brackets or special shelf rails for wall mounting. If not, that might be the key to improving stability and ensuring the unit sits level.

Honestly, I think the constant fuss over perfect flatness with IKEA furniture is a bit exaggerated. These pieces are designed to be flexible and work fine on most walls without issues.

Anyone who expects their KALLAX to be as perfectly flat as a custom-made table might be overlooking the fact that a slight tilt doesn’t affect functionality.

Also, many ask, "How can the shelf be uneven if the wall and floor are straight?" My somewhat provocative theory is that the perception of unevenness often comes from the chosen viewpoint or an unconscious comparison with other furniture or walls in the room that aren’t perfectly level either.

Maybe a change in perspective helps here: a bit of flexibility and pragmatism, and the shelf will stand almost perfectly.

Mounting Kallax to the Wall: Choosing the Right Anchors and Screws.

Use a spirit level to align the shelf.

Attach felt pads to compensate for uneven floors.

If possible, install additional angle brackets for added stability.
