ᐅ KALLAX as a Sideboard in the Living Room – Too Unstable?

Hello everyone,

I am currently considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a sideboard in my living room. I have a question: Is a KALLAX too wobbly to use as a sideboard, especially if I want to place a TV or decorative items on top? My concern is that over time it might not provide the stability that a traditional sideboard would offer. Has anyone had similar experiences or can share tips on how to make a KALLAX more stable? Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,

to respond to Kristopher’s question, here is a brief guide on how to make a KALLAX more stable as a sideboard:

1. Wall attachment: Often overlooked, but essential. IKEA offers suitable brackets and screws.
2. Distributed load: Heavy items should be stored as low as possible or distributed evenly to prevent tipping.
3. Additional shelves: Using shelf inserts can help reinforce the structure.
4. Rubber mats or felt pads as a base: Prevent slipping.

Summary: A KALLAX can work well as a sideboard with a few simple tricks, but without securing it and thoughtful weight distribution, it tends to be unstable.

From a technical perspective, the KALLAX is significantly lighter and less load-bearing than a typical sideboard made of solid wood or MDF, with a back panel and continuous supports.

The construction is based on thin particleboard with a paper surface, which means it is primarily designed for light to medium loads. Wobbling often results from the lack of wall mounting and uneven weight distribution.

For a television or heavy electronic devices, I definitely recommend using anchors and screws for wall mounting, and if necessary, reinforcing it with internal supports.

I love my KALLAX as a sideboard! 🙂 Of course, I was also skeptical about its stability at first, but after securing it to the wall, it feels very sturdy. A few decorative plants and my TV sit on it without any problems. So: don’t hesitate! It’s really great and looks fantastic! 🙂

Thank you for your helpful answers! The tips about wall mounting and distributing the weight were especially useful.

I would really appreciate that if you have the time. I’m not very experienced with DIY and want to avoid making mistakes. Are there any tricks to keep in mind when fixing a KALLAX to the wall?

Also, could you recommend an approximate weight limit for what can be safely placed on such a shelf when it is properly secured?

Hello Kristopher,

I’m glad you asked, because proper fixing really makes a difference. Here are a few points you should consider:

1. Check the wall surface: wooden stud walls can hold well, but for concrete, always use anchors.
2. Mount the KALLAX with the designated brackets as close to the center of the wall as possible.
3. Use screws and anchors of the correct size; IKEA usually provides suitable fasteners.
4. Distribute heavy items mostly on the lower shelves for better stability.

Regarding the weight limit: IKEA recommends about 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs) per compartment. So for the entire shelf, possibly no more than 50-60 kg (110-132 lbs) – with secure wall mounting it can hold more, but I would avoid overloading it.

If you want, I can also explain the different types of anchors, in case you are unsure about the wall.
