Hello everyone, I have a small but constantly annoying problem with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit. The back panel regularly slips out of the groove, no matter how carefully I use or load the shelves. This especially happens when the shelves or baskets are moved frequently or if there are slight vibrations. I’m wondering if it would be a good idea to fix the back panel with some adhesive to prevent it from slipping out all the time. Has anyone had experience with this? Or is there perhaps a better solution than just gluing it? It’s important to me that the structure is not damaged and that the back panel can still be removed later without too much difficulty. Thanks in advance for any tips!

I think the idea of simply gluing is a bit short-sighted. The backing panel in the KALLAX design is not intended for permanent adhesion from a structural point of view. IKEA uses a construction method that allows flexible adjustment. If you glue it, you lose the option to replace the backing panel if needed or to disassemble the shelving unit.

Also: why should the backing panel fall out in the first place? Often the piece isn’t properly seated in the groove, or the shelving unit isn’t perfectly level. These are often the real reasons for such problems.

That is correct. The back panel is intended more as a stabilizing element that fits into the groove. If it comes loose, the shelf might lean slightly or the back panel could suffer minor damage from repeated movements.

One option is to carefully clean the groove and check if the back panel is properly seated. Some also recommend using thin adhesive pads at the joints, which do not create a permanent bond but provide a bit more stability.

I am also familiar with this issue from some KALLAX owners. The back panel is often made of a thin MDF or particleboard sheet that can easily come loose from the groove, especially when the shelf is moved or warped.

What I recommend is not to glue the entire back panel in place, but to use small, removable fasteners such as furniture clips or small plastic brackets that can be screwed in from the back. This way, the shelf remains flexible and you can more easily access the back panel later if needed.

I simply attached my back panel with double-sided tape. It has held well so far and can be removed again if needed.

Technical details about the back panel in KALLAX: It typically consists of a thin fiberboard panel that is slid into the side panels using a tongue-and-groove system to provide stability to the unit.

Permanent gluing can damage the material and is generally not necessary due to the simple construction. If the back panel falls out, it is usually caused by a missing or reduced holding force of the groove.

Recommendations:
- Check that the unit is standing level and not under load that would mechanically stress the back panel.
- Use slight, precise fixings (e.g., small clips or screws with spacers)
- Temporarily apply thin double-sided tape to the sides

I would not recommend gluing with correction fluid or liquid wood glue, as these materials are permanent and can leave residues inside the unit.
