I am currently tasked with assembling a new wardrobe for my bedroom and have decided to use the Ikea PAX system. However, I am a bit overwhelmed by the variety of models, sizes, and interior fittings available. My main question is: How do I choose the right Ikea PAX model for my project that best fits my room, storage needs, and functional requirements? I am especially interested in how to determine the correct dimensions, which interior fittings make sense, and what key points to consider during planning to avoid unpleasant surprises later on.

It’s better to plan generously and ensure a flexible interior layout so you can make changes later. That sounds reasonable. Are there common mistakes to avoid when choosing dimensions? I want to prevent the wardrobe from ending up too large or too small for the space. How much clearance should I allow from other furniture or walls, especially if I plan to have sliding doors?
Regarding the question about dimension choices: The most important point is to allow at least 10cm (4 inches) of extra space on the side for sliding doors to open without obstruction. Additionally, the floor should be level and free of obstacles, as the sliding mechanism can jam otherwise. For hinged doors, a minimum clearance of 60cm (24 inches) in front is recommended to fully open the doors. A common mistake is also underestimating the height: most Pax wardrobes are 201cm (79 inches) tall, but there are models up to 236cm (93 inches), which is especially useful for rooms with high ceilings to make full use of the space.
I recommend a depth of 75cm (30 inches) for wardrobes if you plan to hang a lot of clothes, as 50cm (20 inches) is often too shallow. If the space allows, this is more comfortable. Also, if you want many drawers, a depth of 58cm (23 inches) is a good choice, as it provides a bit more storage space.

Are there common mistakes in dimension selection that should be avoided?Yes, some errors occur quite often:
- Underestimating the actual cabinet depth, especially with sliding doors. The tracks require lateral space.
- Ignoring the room height, which can cause the cabinet not to fit flush with the ceiling, creating dust gaps between the cabinet and the wall.
- Allowing too little clearance to adjacent furniture or doors in the room.
Additionally, it is advisable to carefully measure the furniture placement and door swing areas before purchasing. When in doubt, always plan with a few centimeters (inches) of extra space rather than a too tight fit.
