Hello everyone, I am currently planning to redesign my small bathroom and am considering how to best use the Ikea Platsa shelving units. The bathroom is no larger than 3 square meters (32 square feet) and has narrow spaces, but I urgently need more storage for towels, cleaning supplies, and some toiletries. I am especially interested in how to arrange the modules most efficiently, whether wall mounting makes sense, and what options exist to keep the shelves durable and resistant in the often humid bathroom environment. Additionally, I wonder if there are any specific tips for making the most of the limited space without making the bathroom feel too cramped. Has anyone had experience with PLATSA in the bathroom or knows clever layout ideas? I appreciate any input!

Hello Milesu, your project sounds exciting, and Ikea PLATSA is indeed a flexible shelving system that adapts well to small spaces like yours. First, I would recommend taking precise measurements of your bathroom — including doors, windows, and the positions of the sink and shower. Especially in small bathrooms, accurate planning is essential.

Regarding wall mounting: PLATSA modules are designed to be wall-mounted, which can save a lot of floor space in small rooms. You should carefully check the wall material (drywall, concrete, etc.) and use appropriate anchors to ensure the load-bearing capacity. In damp rooms, mounting shelves higher and more securely is beneficial to prevent mold growth beneath the furniture.

Also, consider treating the back panels with water-resistant coatings or installing a suitable moisture barrier on the wall. The shelves should preferably have water-repellent surfaces to protect against moisture damage.

A tip for storage: combine open shelves for frequently used items with closed boxes or doors to create order without cluttering the overall look. PLATSA offers various sizes, so you can arrange modules side by side or stacked vertically. Take advantage of thinner, longer shelves to utilize narrow spaces (for example, above the toilet or washing machine).

I’m curious whether you plan to use PLATSA doors or keep the compartments open? Also, how is the lighting in the bathroom? Bright rooms usually handle tall shelving units better without feeling oppressive.

Hello Milesu, I agree with the recommendation to install the modules as flush with the wall as possible to maximize space. Another important aspect is the height at which you mount the shelves – depending on your height, you can optimize accessibility and improve ergonomic use.

My advice: Use narrow, horizontally oriented modules above the door or the sink to make use of otherwise unused space. For damp rooms, I recommend treating the modules additionally with a small dehumidifier or silicone-based protective agents, even though the surfaces themselves are relatively durable.

Finally, always consider ventilation to prevent moisture from accumulating in and behind the shelves. An open design can help with this. A combination of open and closed elements ensures both organization and sufficient air circulation.

PLATSA can be easily adapted to small bathrooms. Wall mounting is practical to save space.

Use narrow, tall units instead of wide ones. A combination of open compartments and boxes helps keep things organized.

Avoid placing it in direct splash zones or protect the shelf with seals.

I think the PLATSA shelving system is almost made for small bathrooms. It feels like the Swiss Army knife of furniture – space-saving, versatile, and super flexible! 😄 Especially the ability to combine the modules in different ways is invaluable.

To prevent the bathroom from feeling too crowded, I recommend using light-colored doors or even leaving some shelves open. This makes everything feel more airy. It also works great to mount the shelves a bit above the floor – it looks clean and makes cleaning easier. Using stylish baskets or boxes not only keeps things tidy but also adds a really nice touch.

So: Don’t hesitate to make the most of the PLATSA’s full potential!

Also make sure to treat the back panels with water-resistant products if needed or install a suitable moisture barrier film on the wall.

That is an important point, but I doubt many DIYers will go to the trouble of placing a film behind every shelf. Usually, the furniture is installed on regular walls, depending on the material and ventilation. Are there any studies or practical experiences showing how much the PLATSA furniture actually suffers from moisture damage?

Additionally, I would be interested to know how this affects the indoor climate in the long term. Are there possibly better alternatives to PLATSA for use in damp rooms, or should one definitely opt for special materials? I feel this aspect is often overlooked in the discussion.
