Hello everyone,

I am considering purchasing the IKEA Brimnes wardrobe because its design and storage capacity suit my needs. However, I have concerns about its stability under heavy loads.

Specifically, I would like to know how stable the Brimnes wardrobe is when filled with heavy items—for example, many books, electronic devices, or larger weights on the shelves.

Are there any user experiences or tests available that provide information about the load-bearing capacity and long-term durability of the wardrobe? How does the material (particleboard, MDF?) behave under continuous load? Are there any recommendations for reinforcement or regarding the number of shelves to be used?

I would appreciate it if someone with personal experience or technical knowledge could share some insights. Thank you!

The Brimnes is solidly built but not designed to hold very heavy loads. It is somewhat limited for many books.

Make sure to attach the back panel correctly, as it provides most of the stability.

The Brimnes wardrobe is mainly made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and particleboard, which provide moderate stability.

- The load capacity of the shelves is approximately 15–20 kg (33–44 lbs) per shelf, according to IKEA.
- The back panel is made of thin hardboard, which significantly reinforces the structure and stabilizes it against lateral tipping.
- Under prolonged heavy loads above this value, bending and material fatigue should be expected.

Recommendation: If you intend to store heavy items, you should not exceed the specified weight limits and may consider adding additional reinforcements, such as metal brackets on the shelves. Properly secured wall anchoring is also mandatory, as the wardrobe may tip over otherwise.

Exactly! You can easily upgrade the Brimnes wardrobe with simple small tricks. A few metal brackets here and there often solve the problem. And honestly, given the price, you shouldn’t expect too much – properly assembled, it can last a long time.

As a supplement: The stability of IKEA furniture like Brimnes heavily depends on the assembly.

- Wall anchors must be suitable for the installation
- All screws must be properly and securely tightened
- Excessive loads on individual shelves can exceed their load-bearing capacity

In the long term, the choice of material (particleboard) imposes certain limitations. For heavy loads, alternatives made of solid wood are preferable.

I have filled the Brimnes with many books, no issues so far. The back panel is installed, and the wall mounting is done. I estimate the load to be about 15 kg per shelf (33 lbs).

I am considering adding reinforcements, but for now, it’s sufficient.
