Hello everyone,

I have the following problem: I want to install the baseboards from Ikea Metod, but the floor in my kitchen is far from even. There are noticeable irregularities and slight warping, which make attaching the baseboards difficult. I am looking for a solution to securely and neatly fix the Metod baseboards without them sticking out anywhere or becoming loose later. Are there any proven techniques or materials you can recommend? Tips for preparing the floor or alternative fastening methods would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hello jimmiese,

To properly install the Ikea Metod baseboards on uneven floors, it is important to first measure the floor accurately. Irregularities in the floor can cause the baseboard to protrude at certain points or have no contact with the floor at all. I recommend the following approach:

- Use a long spirit level or straightedge to check the floor section beneath the baseboards in order to identify specific uneven spots.
- Uneven areas can be compensated with small, wedge-shaped shims placed under the baseboard. Suitable materials include plastic shims or homemade wooden blocks that are sanded thin.
- Metod baseboards are usually attached with clips, which are typically secured to the front of the kitchen base cabinets. The baseboard should not rest rigidly on the floor but be mounted slightly floating so that the unevenness does not cause tension.
- If the floor is very uneven, a flexible installation using silicone adhesive or construction adhesive as a supplement may be useful. This securely fixes the baseboard and prevents small gaps.
- Minor gaps to the floor can optionally be visually concealed with neutral acrylic or an elastic sealant.

It is also important to fit the baseboard angles precisely at corners, as unevenness here can lead to issues. If you like, please share how severe the floor irregularities are (height of deviations), and I can offer more specific advice.

Hello jimmiese,

I agree with bapar’s comments and would like to add that Ikea Metod baseboards are generally designed to be installed on relatively level floors. If the floor is significantly uneven, it might help to apply a thin layer of leveling compound or filler before installation to even out the biggest irregularities.

Alternatively, you can use flexible mounting clips that allow slight movement, so the baseboard is not subjected to excessive stress in certain spots, which could cause it to shift or crack.

If you prefer a less complicated solution, you could also use adhesive pads or double-sided mounting tape on the back of the baseboards to secure them in places where clips don’t hold or where unevenness causes problems. Just make sure the material is suitable for damp rooms if your kitchen might get humid.

How high are the floor irregularities? Minor unevenness of a few millimeters usually isn’t a problem, but anything over 5mm (0.2 inches) should be leveled out.

For factual clarification:

Metod baseboards are typically attached using snap-on clips that are screwed into the kitchen base cabinets. On uneven floors, the key point is that the baseboards should not rest directly on the floor, as this can cause them to warp or overload the clips.

It is recommended to:
- Measure and locate the floor irregularities beforehand.
- Position the clips and baseboards so that the baseboard is slightly suspended, avoiding direct contact with the floor.
- For larger uneven areas, the clip positions can be slightly adjusted or shims/filler putty can be used to compensate for discrepancies.
- Generally, a gap of about 2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 inches) should be maintained between the baseboard and the floor.

This prevents stress, ensures a clean appearance, and secures a durable installation.

I recently solved a similar issue and can share my experience:

First, I measured the unevenness with a spirit level – in some places, there was up to an 8 mm (0.3 inch) difference. Since the Ikea Metod baseboards rely on a clip system and these clips are particularly sensitive to pressure near the floor, I did the following:

- Instead of installing the clips directly at the bottom of the cabinet, I fixed them at a higher point so that the baseboard hangs about 5 mm (0.2 inch) above the floor.
- For the joints, I used flexible acrylic sealant (baseboard-friendly) to ensure clean and watertight transitions.
- I did not level large floor unevenness with filler because I didn’t want to remove the old floor covering. Instead, I placed thin plastic wedges under the baseboard in problematic areas. I secured these wedges with mounting adhesive to prevent movement.

This way, the baseboard sits flush, no gaps are visible, and it remains stable. At the corners, it is important not to force the baseboard into place but rather leave a little space and finish with silicone.

I can confirm this, but in my experience, the tape holds less well with moisture and over time. Clips combined with light adhesive support provide the most stable solution.

Hello,

I would also recommend not letting the baseboards rest directly on the floor, especially if the floor is uneven. The clips of the Metod system are designed to hold the baseboard on the cabinet front, so they essentially float.

If you seal the floor with hard floor silicone (at the transition to the baseboard), you can visually even out small gaps. A clean preparation is also important – the substrate should be clean and dry.

If unevenness is very pronounced, it might be worth using an appropriate profile underlay, which you place where needed before fixing the baseboards.

In short, attach the baseboards to the cabinet, keep a gap from the floor, and fill any gaps with silicone as needed.
