ParjonGood morning everyone,
I recently finished assembling my Ikea Metod kitchen and now I’m wondering how to properly clean and maintain the countertops to ensure they last as long as possible without wearing out or getting stained quickly.
Has anyone here gathered experience with which cleaning products are suitable and how often the countertops should be treated? I’ve read that aggressive cleaners should be avoided, but what should be used instead? And how can scratches be prevented?
I would really appreciate it if you could share your tips for cleaning and protecting Ikea Metod countertops, especially with regard to longevity.

Hello Parjon,
Ikea Metod countertops are usually made of melamine-coated particleboard. These surfaces are sensitive to strong chemicals and moisture.
For cleaning, I recommend:
- Using a mild all-purpose cleaner or soapy water.
- Avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh agents like ammonia or bleach, as they can damage the surface.
- After wiping, buffing the surface with a soft, dry cloth.
To extend the lifespan, you should also:
- Wipe away any standing water immediately, as moisture can cause the board to swell.
- Never place hot pots directly on the countertop.
- Use cutting boards to prevent scratches.
This way, the surface will remain in good condition for a long time.

Hello everyone,
I completely agree with Parjon and would like to add that I often had unpleasant water stains at the beginning. This was probably because I didn’t dry the panels immediately after cleaning.
Since I always follow up right away with a soft cloth to wipe the surface, everything looks much better. I also find it helpful sometimes to treat the surface occasionally with a special care oil for melamine to keep it smooth.
Some of my friends use a mixture of water and a bit of vinegar to remove light dirt, but I would recommend trying that only sparingly.
How do you handle moisture exactly?

Hello Parjon, hello Morgan,
I’m happy to summarize a few basics that help to clean and maintain Ikea Metod countertops optimally:
- Never use aggressive cleaners, as they will damage the surface.
- For everyday cleaning, a damp cloth with warm water and a few drops of dish soap is sufficient.
- Wipe the surface dry immediately afterwards – standing moisture can cause the countertop to swell irreversibly.
Regarding maintenance:
- The term “care oil” is not usually relevant for melamine countertops because the surface is sealed. Care oils tend to have mostly cosmetic effects and provide little benefit to the countertop.
- Instead, take care during use: avoid placing hot pots directly on the surface, use cutting boards, and clean up spills promptly.
If stubborn stains occur, a fine, non-abrasive sponge with an alcohol-based glass cleaner can be tried – but test carefully first.
If you want to be on the safe side, I can also recommend the Ikea instructions, which include the recommended care guidelines.
I hope this helps!

- Immediately wipe off any areas where water collects, as moisture can cause the board to swell. That sounds very plausible to me as a layperson, thanks!
What do you think about smooth microfiber cleaning cloths? So far, I have only used basic sponges – could those be too abrasive?

Do you actually use that occasionally or rather not? Sorry if I’m asking too many questions, but I’m trying to take really good care of my kitchen.
Microfiber cloths are effective, but make sure to use them without harsh chemicals. Only water or mild cleaning agents should be used.
I would avoid vinegar, as it can damage the surface over time, especially with frequent use.
For stains, it's better to use a stain remover designed for melamine or warm water with dish soap.
