ᐅ How can I securely install Ikea Metod cabinets on drywall (plasterboard) walls?

RasonHello everyone,
I am planning to mount Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on my drywall. I am concerned about the load-bearing capacity and safety of the installation since drywall is naturally not as strong as solid walls. My question is: How can I securely and permanently mount Ikea Metod cabinets on drywall without damaging the wall or the furniture?
For your information: The walls consist of two layers of drywall installed consecutively, and in some areas, I can also screw into metal stud profiles.
I am especially interested in which fasteners work best (e.g., special anchors or mounting rails), the best way to distribute the load, and any additional tips for preparing the wall or preventing damage.
Thanks in advance for your expertise!

- First, check whether you can mount the cabinets directly onto metal stud profiles or wooden battens. Fastening to the studs provides more stability compared to solely using hollow wall anchors.
- Use heavy-duty anchors designed for drywall, such as metal hollow wall anchors or specialized drywall toggle anchors, which ensure high load capacity.
- Ideally, install an additional horizontal wooden support batten on the wall to distribute the cabinet weight over a larger area and serve as a stable base.
- Make sure to place anchors at least at two different fastening points per cabinet to evenly distribute the load and prevent tilting.
- Before installation, verify that the drywall panels are undamaged and dry, because moisture or damage significantly reduces their load-bearing capacity.
This procedure follows common installation standards and ensures a permanently secure mounting.

With a double-layer drywall, the load-bearing capacity is slightly better than with a single layer, but still limited. Therefore, I recommend:
- Before installation, be sure to locate the position of the metal studs using a stud finder or metal detector. The cabinets can then be attached directly to these studs or to sturdy wooden battens screwed across the studs.
- Wooden battens (at least 40x60 mm (1.5x2.4 inches)) are a reliable solution. They distribute the load and allow for stronger screw connections.
- When using cavity anchors, make sure they are rated for the weight of the IKEA cabinets. Using multiple anchors during installation helps ensure the cabinet remains stable.
- If possible, also screw the back panel of the Metod cabinets to the wall, provided it is sturdy enough.
- Ensure each cabinet unit is secured with at least 4 fixing points.
All in all: Proper preparation of the mounting solution is key to safety. This helps prevent later loosening or slipping.

I recently installed a kitchen unit with Metod on drywall – here is my tip:
I can only agree with this! The wooden beams are invaluable. I built a kind of support rail from leftover wood, which I fixed to the profiles, then hung the cabinets on it. The main load rests on the wood, drywall only distributes the weight.
Important: It’s better to spend a bit more time on preparation than to end up with a sagging cabinet. And if the drywall only supports the cabinet in the middle, don’t underestimate the weight.

Metod on drywall?
- Attach wooden beams horizontally
- Screw into the beams, not just the drywall
- Use hollow wall anchors if there is no beam
- At least two anchors per side cabinet
This will hold securely.

Always pay attention to the following with drywall (gypsum board) walls:
- Never attach cabinets using regular wall plugs alone
- Use hollow wall anchors or metal fasteners
- Use support battens if possible
- Distribute the weight evenly
This ensures the cabinets remain stable.
