Hello everyone, I recently assembled a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA and unfortunately noticed during transport that some edges have small chips or breaks. Although the damage is minor, it is visible in several places and significantly affects the appearance.

My question to the community: What is the best way to repair damaged or broken edges on a BILLY bookshelf? Are there practical and aesthetically pleasing methods to fix these issues? Which tools or materials work best for this?

I would greatly appreciate specific tips, possibly also on how to sand, color-match, or professionally restore such edges. Thank you in advance!

Hello fofite,

First of all, thank you for your detailed description, which helps to assess the problem well. When the edges of BILLY shelves are damaged, it is usually the plastic or melamine foil glued to the particleboard. To repair this, I recommend the following structured approach:

1. Carefully sand the edges: Use fine sandpaper (grit 220-320) and gently sand the damaged area to remove loose fibers or splinters and prepare the surface for the adhesive.

2. Apply edge banding or veneer tape: If the edge is heavily worn, you can cut a self-adhesive veneer tape or edge band foil in a wood finish matching the BILLY color and apply it to the sanded area. Make sure to apply it precisely and without bubbles.

3. Use wood filler or repair putty: For smaller damages, apply suitable wood or furniture filler in a matching color, smooth it out, and once dry, lightly sand again.

4. Color adjustment: To conceal color differences, use a furniture or felt-tip pen in a similar shade. These are well suited for small touch-ups.

5. Seal the repair: A thin layer of clear varnish or furniture oil can protect the repaired area and create a uniform surface.

Common mistakes in repair are sanding too roughly, which can damage the surface too much, or using inappropriate colors when retouching. Therefore, I recommend testing the materials first in an inconspicuous spot.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Small damages to BILLY edges can be quickly repaired with wood repair wax or furniture touch-up markers.

Alternatively, you can cut edge banding to size and iron it on; if done carefully, it becomes almost invisible.

I’m very familiar with this issue; it bothered me on my old BILLY shelf as well. It’s really unfortunate when the surface gets damaged and you see it every day.

What helped me was patience and buying the right materials. I first used wood filler, but that was too imprecise. Then I discovered veneer edging strips that you can iron on—they provide a really clean solution.

Common mistakes during repair include sanding too aggressively, which damages the surface further, or using mismatched colors when retouching.

I can only agree with that—you have to be patient. Sometimes you need to take multiple small steps and check the result frequently along the way. Also: take your time with the preparation! I wish you good luck with the repair, you can definitely do it! 🙂
