Hello everyone,

I am currently facing an issue where the doors of my Billy shelves are slightly misaligned and sometimes scrape or do not close flush. My question is: How can I properly adjust crooked Billy doors to ensure smooth closing and an even gap?

I have already tried tightening the screws on the hinges and carefully adjusting them, but so far the results have not been satisfactory. Is there a recommended method to adjust the doors without removing them? Are there specific points I should pay special attention to, considering that the Billy door is relatively light and delicate?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello ondole,

What you’re describing is a common issue with Billy-style doors – the hinges are adjustable, but you need to know how to set them properly. Here is my step-by-step guide:

1. First, open the door and locate the visible screws on the hinges. Billy typically uses swivel and tilt hinge mechanisms.

2. Start by not fully loosening the upper screws; instead, turn the adjustment mechanism on the hinge to align the door horizontally. This will move the door left or right.

3. Next, adjust the vertical position: there is usually a screw that you slightly loosen, then shift the door up or down until it fits flush.

4. Finally, check the gap between the door and the frame to ensure the clearances are as even as possible.

A typical mistake is applying excessive force to bend the door or unnecessarily loosening the screws, which makes the adjustment harder.

If the door is still crooked, check whether the shelving unit itself is level – a slightly tilted cabinet can significantly affect the door alignment.

I hope this helps you! 🙂

Exactly, the small hinges are actually the tilt-and-turn locks for doors with Billy!

I recently managed to adjust the door so it no longer rattles and closes much more smoothly. A little tip from me: if you slightly lift the door, you can usually adjust the top screw a bit to prevent it from sagging sideways.

And if you bring a bit of patience, you’ll quickly get the hang of it 😉. It’s always important to close the door and check the result after every small adjustment.

Just a quick question regarding the previous tips:

Has it been considered whether the wall or floor might not be completely level? This often causes shelves to be crooked, which in turn affects the doors. Adjusting the hinges only helps to a certain extent.

Also, it’s worth removing the door completely before making adjustments to check all the screws – sometimes the hinges themselves are slightly bent or loose, which makes proper alignment difficult.

So my advice: first level the furniture itself, then adjust the doors. Otherwise, you’ll be fighting against windmill-like problems.

Thanks for the tip, enrique7! Actually, the shelf is resting slightly on a carpet, and the floor is not perfectly even. I will temporarily place the shelf on a stable base and then try adjusting the doors again.

I will check that as well.

I’ll keep you updated once I have adjusted the doors, thanks again for the detailed explanations!

A brief update from my side:

For anyone still unsure, here is an additional overview of how the Billy door hinge adjustment works in detail:

- Adjustment screw for horizontal offset (left/right): Usually located in the hinge head, adjustable with a screwdriver.

- Height adjustment: Often a screw at the bottom of the hinge, sometimes a countersunk screw. Slightly lift or lower the door, then tighten again.

- Depth adjustment (distance to shelf front): Possible with some Billy hinge types by loosening the rear screw on the hinge slightly, moving the door forward or backward, then securing it again.

However, if the doors are severely warped, adjustment alone won’t help. In that case, replacement or exchange must be considered.

I hope this makes door adjustment clearer for everyone. Good luck with the setup! 🙂
