Good evening everyone

I’m starting a small collection thread here for photos and progress updates on our second building project.
We’ve already moved to the Palatinate region to be closer to the construction site. Now we’re watching eagerly and happily as our (hopefully final) dream home takes shape near family.

One big challenge still ahead of us is the facade design. I really love the Nordic style with brickwork and mullioned windows. That won’t be possible here for two reasons: firstly, no one here can do bricklaying, and secondly, it would stand out too much. We will be going with a rendered facade. How to design the colors of the facade and windows to still create some country house / cottage charm is currently still a work in progress mentally.

Otherwise, I’m sharing our plans here and how it will eventually be built.
The support pillar marked near the kitchen island could be removed for a small extra cost, so that will be gone.

The room for “garden equipment” under the garage will get a partition wall for structural reasons.
It won’t be fully finished living space like in the house, but underfloor heating will be installed, along with a lockable door and a window. It’s meant to store garden tools but also some of the building services equipment, since the utility room (HAR) is quite small, and maybe be used as a party room.

We had three construction companies in the final selection. In the end, we chose the “doer” – a builder recommended to us here by friends and family. No website, no smartphone, but he is on site every day himself working in overalls. He has a very good reputation in this area and now rarely builds single-family homes. We were a bit lucky through personal connections and a very friendly initial phone call to get our foot in the door. So far we are very satisfied with this choice.

The parquet floor looks really great. And it looks even better over a large area. 😉
So you can already start looking forward to it...
Do you like it too?
My husband liked it immediately as well; it’s a really nice, warm tone.
I think any other parquet flooring would be too expensive for me. A few hundred more wouldn’t bother me, but I wouldn’t find a larger four-figure increase worth it for a different type of flooring.

I agree with @i_b_n_a_n. I really like the parquet flooring. In my opinion, it looks natural and not artificial. (Just to clarify: there is also real parquet that looks artificial.) The color tone feels warm and light to me, both of which I appreciate.

Edit: We came to the same conclusion independently. 🙂

If it’s installed wall-to-wall, you’ll like it 🙂
Even better if it’s available either free of charge or with only a small additional cost.
Just lay it out in the office! Use sturdy rolls and, if you want, a high-quality dirt-trapping mat as a carpet on top. There are premium models available with attractive colors and patterns... and they’re a thousand times better than those chair mats.

If the parquet flooring underneath does get damaged in any way, which I doubt, it’s still hidden beneath the nice carpet or can be sanded down in 10 years, no problem!?

I believe this rather affordable parquet doesn’t have a thick enough wear layer for frequent sanding.
I’ve seen parquet badly damaged after rolling back and forth on the same spot for 10 years. On the other hand, we didn’t really focus much on floor protection back then—I just put some carpet on top, but one with texture and varying thickness in places. Maybe I should look for alternatives that really protect the floor properly.

Exactly. You didn’t take care of floor protection at that time and you don’t know which parquet it was back then.
Now you’re choosing oak parquet, taking care of rolling chairs and using a protective underlay (carpet), so nothing should happen.
Sanding 1–2 times will probably be possible, but likely won’t be necessary 😉
IF it does become necessary after 10 years, you’ll spend a few hundred euros for sanding and by then will have long forgotten the headaches you’re having now with possible alternative choices.
At least that’s my humble opinion, as we enjoy our wooden/parquet floor daily and still see it as a “functional object” that can have some wear or defects if needed, without causing stress 🙂

Do you use these XeloTech rollers directly on hardwood floors? They look really good and have excellent reviews.
