Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!
That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...
Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...
The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.
After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.
The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

At the moment, only the soda maker and the kettle are there, but a mixer and our protein shake blender, as well as possibly the bread slicer, will be added. In theory, this also serves as a workspace where you can work on the countertop. It’s basically a replacement for the pantry. When I think about my activities in the kitchen, I find the storage space useful, but working there is impractical. Often, residues (crumbs, splashes, steam, etc.) remain in the pantry, which then requires inconvenient cleaning (taking everything out -> cleaning -> putting everything back), or a hidden dirty area develops if you skip cleaning regularly.

NoggerLoger4 Jun 2021 10:38We will see how it goes. It doesn’t cook, but it’s ideal for our shakes, hand mixers, or bread machines. In the past, we never felt like digging out the shaker, so having it ready like this is quite convenient. Still, this is new for us as well, and I will check if the cabinet is any good.

It is a Häcker Systemat 3.0 kitchen. The furniture looks quite stylish. However, I find the lighting, especially the three “inverted bowls,” unsuitable for a kitchen where cooking takes place. They hang too low and therefore get dirty far too quickly. The era of spotlight timers is pretty much over now.Even lights mounted flush to the ceiling tend to get grimy in the kitchen sooner or later.
Stylish things are often impractical.

NoggerLoger4 Jun 2021 14:15Have reflector lights ever been out of fashion? Looking at the current Molto Luce catalog, reflector lights are still useful. It always depends on the overall lighting design. The reflectors diffuse indirect light over the cabinets, which is dimmable, into the living space and create accents. Additional general lighting is provided by a light cove measuring 7 meters (23 feet) in length. Light intensity and color are controlled based on the time of day, meaning in the evening the reflectors and cove glow softly and in warm white (Dimtone GU10 + TW strip). At midday and in the morning, they are brighter and whiter if light is needed. The reflector lights above the counter are controlled separately and switch on when the stove is in use. However, I will probably hang them a bit higher so that less cooking fumes get caught (I already suspected they were too low). The effort needed to patch the ceiling will show, but if it’s too much, other pendant lights will be installed there. The current ones only cost €10 each from Ikea.
Regarding reflector lights and lighting in general, it’s all a matter of personal taste. For example, I don’t like panels in the living and dining area because they don’t produce interesting lighting. They provide bright, even light, but I already have that in my office.

Which "appliances" are actually meant,For those that will be purchased 🙂If that doesn’t prove to be practical, you could modify something, for example with a pull-out worktop or a roller shutter cupboard.
At least this is more practical than creating a new room just for the toaster and similar items.

Bertram1005 Jun 2021 15:07I don’t find the “taking out” of appliances to be a problem, as I’ve noticed. What bothers me more are long distances. I have a fairly large kitchen where I can still reach everything quickly and easily.
The large kitchen machine, along with its accessories, is stored in a lower drawer. Just grab it firmly, lift it up, take half a step to the countertop, and you’re done. It’s the same with all my appliances.
Only the bread and cold cut slicer stays permanently on the countertop. Not ideal, but because of the crumbs, I didn’t want to store it in a cabinet. I find having enough workspace more important than having a whole set of appliances stored away in cabinets.
Another advantage is that I store my appliances distributed around the kitchen so they are close to the frequently used accessories. That’s also very practical.
