Hello everyone,

We are currently planning the arrangement of our recessed lights—mainly in the shower area of our bathroom.

At the moment, our contract includes 4 recessed lights at our request, but this number can of course be increased or decreased anytime (1 recessed light for concrete ceiling = €70.00).

I have attached our bathroom on the upper floor.

Shower: the full depth to the "toilet wall" is 2.10 m (7 feet), with a width of 1.00 m (3 feet 3 inches). The wall towards the door will be built up three-quarters high, meaning the shower is not fully enclosed and may still get some light since the wall does not reach the ceiling. The toilet wall is half height and has glass above it, so light also comes in here. How many recessed lights would you install in the shower, and how would you arrange them? Are 4 recessed lights really necessary here?

I have also attached our kitchen on the ground floor.

We are planning to add 2 recessed lights above the breakfast bar, plus a normal ceiling light centered in the kitchen. Does this make sense or not? The kitchen is quite long, so we assume that 2 recessed lights above the bar area would improve the lighting.

We are also considering typical recessed lighting along the stairs—see the example image attached.

What do you think about that? Is the main contractor allowed to charge the €70.00 per recessed light here as well, or is it somehow cheaper to install wall-mounted lights? Does this make sense at all, or does anyone have experience with it? Or is it ultimately just a visual highlight that ends up costing a lot?

Otherwise, we are not planning any other recessed lights in the house.

We would appreciate brief feedback on our thoughts 🙂

Bathroom dimming? Not really necessary, right?

and/or to achieve the perfect brightness setting for the spotlights. Slightly oversize the capacity, adjust, done.

Yesterday, we worked on our preliminary lighting and electrical planning.

We are still missing some price quotes from our main contractor, and we would also like to get an idea based on experience about the additional costs involved, so that we can possibly rule out or reconsider some options.

- Dimming - Additional cost? Does anything need to be rewired here, or is it simply a matter of installing a different light switch that might cost around $10 more? (Sorry, I have no experience with electrical work.)

- LAN socket instead of TV aerial socket - is the cost the same, or is there any reason for extra work here?

- Indoor motion sensors - this is currently the biggest issue, as we are planning to have 3 light points with motion sensors in our ground floor hallway, plus 1 light point with a motion sensor in the basement. What are the exact additional costs for this? How expensive is it? Are extra sensors needed, and how does the price compare to a standard light point? Are the connections significantly more expensive?

- Outdoor motion sensors - same question?

- Power outlet with USB port - additional cost of about $10 compared to a standard outlet—is that correct?

Often, simply replacing the switch is enough. However, you should know this in advance so the electrician doesn’t overcrowd the junction box. There might be limitations if you want to control the lights from multiple locations. The lamps or bulbs used must be compatible.

It’s definitely more fiddly to connect everything inside the socket, especially if you want two LAN ports per outlet. I would definitely go for that. Don’t skimp on the LAN wiring, since it becomes increasingly important with home office setups and streaming TV over the internet. You’ll also need well-placed LAN outlets for access points. 5 GHz Wi-Fi has a hard time passing through walls, ceilings, and underfloor heating.

Motion sensor

Or presence detector?

No, more like €40 or more per outlet. The original Gira or Busch-Jaeger outlets with USB are quite expensive. Of course, there are much cheaper options on Amazon, but they may not fit your selected frame design.

Thanks for the detailed information.

What is the difference between a presence detector and a motion sensor?

Ultimately, I want to be able to walk down to the basement and back without having to operate a light switch. The same goes for the hallway. What would be the best solution for this?

For me, there is an additional cost of 50 EUR for standard Schuko sockets to Schuko sockets with USB. I would rather get those myself elsewhere...

- Outdoor motion sensor – same situation?

- Outlet with USB port (additional cost of 10€ compared to a standard outlet – is that correct?)

For the outdoor motion sensors, our electrician charges (net) €185 plus €80 for a manual override switch for the motion sensor with settings: On/Off/Automatic.

The outlet with USB costs us an additional €65. We also inquired about an outlet with a night light feature; the extra charge was €95, which we found too expensive.
