Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

Here is a brief report with some pictures of our kitchen. It is a LEICHT Contino with a Dekton countertop. Appliances are from Bosch, Miele, Bora, Blanco, and Villeroy & Boch.

We have now been living in our house for more than a year and use the kitchen daily. With this experience, I believe a well-founded report can be given.

During our house planning, the kitchen played a central role. We wanted to make it the focal point of the open living space. In retrospect, the kitchen island was the right choice, although we do miss having a small sink. A larger kitchen would certainly have been a better option.

Well, now on to the report about our kitchen.

Cabinetry
Drawers
  • The drawers are generally sturdy. However, some do not run smoothly and cause unpleasant noises when opening and closing.

Fronts
  • The Tocco fronts are really great. They are very durable and, above all, easy to clean without leaving any residue.
  • The Ikono fronts are also good. Since they have a slightly textured surface, cleaning is not quite as easy as with the Tocco fronts.

Sink and Faucet
  • We chose a simple but very large stainless steel sink from Blanco.
  • The size is fantastic.
  • Although stainless steel scratches easily and seldom stays spotless, it is easy to clean.
  • The faucet from Villeroy & Boch is excellent; we especially appreciate the spray function.

Appliances
Bora Basic BFIA
  • The induction cooktop performs well; there is little to complain about.
  • The extractor works brilliantly. We never imagined that this downdraft extractor would suction as effectively as it does.
  • The controls are problematic. The circular slider is difficult to operate precisely, so the wrong setting is often selected. This is not too bad in itself, but there is no "back" button. You have to wait until the control reverts to the previous position. This is very frustrating and makes it impossible to quickly adjust heat and ventilation. In our opinion, the control concept is poorly thought out.

Miele K 37683 iDF
  • We are satisfied with the refrigerator. The 0°C (32°F) zone keeps meat, fish, fruits, and vegetables fresh for a long time. The rest is somewhat unremarkable 🙂

Bosch HNG6764B6
  • Unfortunately, the oven developed a fault within the first year. Bosch service was excellent, and our unit was ultimately replaced. We just had bad luck.
  • We love the oven. For us, the integrated microwave is very convenient.
  • The automatic programs produce great results. Highly recommended.

Bosch SBV68TX06E
  • The XXL dishwasher offers plenty of space due to its height.
  • The cutlery drawer is very practical for us.
  • The cleaning results are not always satisfactory.
  • It often happens that dishes are still wet after the wash cycle.

Countertop
For the countertop, we did not want to compromise and therefore chose 12mm (0.5 inch) Dekton.
  • The sink and cooktop are flush-mounted.
  • The material is really enjoyable. We place hot pots or casserole dishes directly from the oven onto the surface.
  • Cleaning is very easy.
  • The appearance is convincing.

During our house planning, the kitchen played a central role. We wanted it to be the focal point of the open living area. In retrospect, the kitchen island was the right choice, although we do actually miss a small sink. An aircraft carrier-size kitchen would probably have been a better option.

Well, let’s get to the review of our kitchen.

  • The extractor works brilliantly. We never expected the downdraft vent to be so effective.
  • The controls are a disaster. The round slider is only roughly adjustable, often leading to incorrect selections. This isn’t too bad by itself, but there is no "back" button. So, you have to wait until the control panel resets. This is extremely annoying and makes quickly adjusting heat and extraction impossible. In our opinion, this is not a well-thought-out user interface.

We are currently planning a LEICHT kitchen as well. Would you choose a LEICHT kitchen again? After your comment on the cabinetry, I’m not quite sure whether you are ultimately satisfied with the kitchen units or if the drawer issues are a significant annoyance?

I think it’s important to understand what a kitchen actually consists of. The drawers are purchased components and are also used by other manufacturers. They are certainly mid- to upper-range quality. In our previous home, we had a Nobilia kitchen. Compared to LEICHT, it was like a totally flimsy frame. There’s a world of difference. Still, not all of our drawers operate perfectly.

The cabinet fronts, which are a core competency of kitchen manufacturers, are really excellent. We will build another home in our lifetime, and then I would definitely consider Next125 as well and take a much closer look at and compare the drawers. You can’t go wrong with LEICHT, but I’m just not as impressed as I am, for example, by the countertop.

Another important point is to look at the layout of the cabinet unit dimensions (the “raster”). We have a lower drawer with a 4-unit raster. That is a huge component and an absolute waste of space. We will probably retrofit an internal drawer.

So, overall we are satisfied, but not more than that :-)

Ok. Thanks for your feedback 🙂.

Regarding drawers:
We have Blum drawers with the Servo-Drive system throughout, and so far they are working perfectly and are very easy to adjust (since I am very, very particular about gap dimensions, I adjusted them myself).
For the electric refrigerator door, we use the Easys motor from Hettich, which after an initially difficult adjustment now operates very reliably without any problems.

At least the main kitchen is finished. Purchased from Plana (...) – after my own research, it is a Pronorm kitchen. Matte white lacquer fronts, ceramic worktop, Bosch appliances.

Only the tile backsplash (Cifre Ceramica opal marine), the new refrigerator, and of course the lighting are still missing.
