Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

During testing in the planning phase, the lava gray finish was one of the most durable surfaces available. However, we do not yet have long-term experience since we are not living in the house yet.

Just finished installing it last Friday; only the chairs for the dining table are still missing. A door is integrated into the white built-in cabinet, cleverly hiding the access to the pantry.

The furniture is from Next125 in lava gray, and the wood is oak, with the dining table and breakfast bar brushed... looked great in the showroom, but I think it might get annoying if you spill something. 😉

I like the kitchen design in dark gray and warm wood as well as the flooring, but I have to say I have never missed ceiling height anywhere—except here. Also, I think the kitchen will lack natural daylight and sufficient countertop space. Looking at the room in the first photo, I don’t feel comfortable.

Now I am curious about the actual height of the room.

Yes, ceiling height is indeed an issue... I would have liked an extra 20cm (8 inches) too, but a frustrating zoning plan and an authority that didn’t want to recognize the difference between the intersection of the rising wall with the roof covering and the top edge of the parapet restricted us to an interior height of 2.60m (8 ft 6 in)... unfortunately. The room is a bit more narrow and elongated than I had hoped, but the first image exaggerates this impression since it was taken with a wide-angle lens.

Natural light will not be a problem; there is an atrium directly opposite the kitchen. See the (somewhat older) photo without the kitchen.

Large, open living room under construction with glass sliding doors, cables, tools, and construction wood.

Without the wide-angle lens, it no longer feels quite as cramped.

Thank you for the reply. I would have also estimated 260 since the pantry door is 200/211, then a 40 cm (16 inch) cabinet above, and finally a 10 cm (4 inch) cladding to reach the 260.
An atrium, nice 🙂
But you can already see that the kitchen is located in the darker part of the room. I like the dark finish of the kitchen and hope you won’t regret it later on.
We have a window strip (east) above our dark countertop, and despite terrace doors 4 meters (13 feet) away, the light above the island still has to be on. Well, you can live with it if the design is an eye-catcher 😀

hmm I will probably have 267cm (106 inches) and my room is much smaller. I think I still won’t make the cabinets reach the ceiling. That’s probably the main reason for the compact look, right?
