Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

Oh, it's not that bad. It looks busier in the pictures than it actually is. This pattern is used throughout the entire lower area.
The tiling was done in 2006. Today, I would choose different tiles and lay them differently as well. Tastes change over time.

I have the same pattern and still find it very nice...

Tastes simply differ. For example, I find aluminum profiles as handles terrible, but the tiles, on the other hand, don't bother me visually at all...

We actually wouldn’t choose the handles again. Not because we find them unattractive, but because they attract dust so easily and are prone to scratches. Cutlery has fallen on them quite often, and they already have many marks from that...

Overall, though, we love the kitchen. We made the best of the existing conditions.
If possible, I would advise against a U-shaped layout with similar space limitations. When two people work in the kitchen, you always get in each other's way. But we had to accept this, as we planned the connections like this back in 2006, and changing it without major effort wasn’t really feasible.

How much did your kitchen cost?

@shenja
Do you have velvet matte lacquer fronts? Lava black or onyx black?

Ours was roughly around 19,000 with a Bora Puxu, Bosch refrigerator with VitaFresh, and Bosch oven with pyrolytic cleaning. It’s a Linea, and as far as I know, behind it, our kitchen is from Nobilia.

Nice kitchen, Shenja – finally a different color combination.

Yes, the issue with attached handle strips is well known, although I believe there are quality differences depending on the material.

And no one wants to believe that a U-shape, and even worse, a G-shape is very impractical BEFORE buying the kitchen. Having no corners was the first requirement my daughter set for her new kitchen (for 4 people). That might work for a household of 2. She also definitely wanted traditional handles (she has brass handles) because of her “delicate and well-maintained” fingers. Basically, the kitchen should be practical and easy to use.

Thank you very much.
Unfortunately, the U-shaped layout couldn’t be avoided. We built the house in 2006 and took our old kitchen with us, so the water connections were planned under the window. Well, with the new kitchen, we had no choice but to go with a U again. Of course, the water connections could have been relocated, but we really didn’t want to deal with that anymore. There are worse things, but if I were to build again, I wouldn’t plan it like this.

However, we love the kitchen fronts and planned everything according to our preferences. The trash bin is under the countertop, the dishwasher is raised, and we have an oven plus a combination steam oven with an oven function. We love it. If there had been enough space, we would have also installed a fully automatic coffee machine.
