ᐅ Kitchen – Missing Cabinet – Is Withholding Payment Justified?

Hello,

Our kitchen is currently being installed. The team is doing a great job so far, and we’re excited to see how it will look. However, we’ll have to wait a few more weeks for the “completely finished” view. The manufacturer forgot one of our cabinets.

The upper section is missing from a tall cabinet above the built-in dishwasher, so there is a gap for now. Once the installers are finished, of course, the remaining payment will be due. We paid a 50% deposit and still owe the other 50%.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Would you withhold part of the final payment because of the missing cabinet, or pay in full and hope they still fix it? If you would withhold something, what amount do you think is appropriate?

Good luck, Kati

If the relationship has been good so far, I would simply ask your kitchen showroom what procedure they suggest. Any reasonable, straightforward person wouldn’t say, “Go ahead and pay everything now; we’ll finish it later.” I would expect something like you pay everything except 10% (or even 5% if you prefer), and the rest will be settled at the end. I also think €500 (about $540) is rather little, but of course, it depends on the total price.

If you have any doubts based on evaluations, I would do the same as @Pacmansh.

Yes, that’s a good idea, I’ll just give them a call.

We have now officially accepted the kitchen. The installers pointed out all the defects on their own, which we probably wouldn’t have even noticed. They will replace a panel because it has two paint drips. And a shelf due to a small internal damage. Plus, the missing cabinet.

Other than that, we are very happy so far:

Kitchen with island, white cabinets, wooden floor, large window front; room still unfinished.

I really like your kitchen.
What materials are the countertop and backsplash made of?
Would you be willing to share the price of the kitchen?
I’ve just purchased a new kitchen to replace the old one as well. However, the existing limitations from the almost square-shaped room, a window, two doors, the utility connections, and the large dining area didn’t leave much room to change the cabinet layout.
Still, I’m very happy with it and enjoy every day that, as a retiree, I decided to renovate the entire kitchen instead of only replacing the countertop as originally planned.

I just bought a new kitchen myself to replace the old one. However, the existing constraints of the almost square room, one window, two doors, the connections, and the large dining area didn’t leave much room to change the cabinet layout.

Oh, thanks for the compliment. =)
The countertop and backsplash are made of basic particleboard. I wouldn’t have dared to go with real wood. The model is Sylt from Nobilia, a country-style kitchen with matte lacquered fronts. The entire kitchen cost €20,400 (about $22,400), but a large part of that was for the somewhat more expensive electrical appliances and sink. The cooktop is a Bora Puxu, with two dishwashers, a large refrigerator with a 0-degree zone, and a pyrolytic oven—all from Miele. The sink and faucet are from Villeroy & Boch.
Sounds a bit fancy; we actually wanted Bosch appliances again since we’ve always been very satisfied with them. But the kitchen dealer apparently had contracts with Miele and claimed he could offer them to us cheaper than Bosch/Siemens.

I can understand that. There’s nothing nicer than enjoying your kitchen. I always think it’s money well spent. You spend a lot of time in the kitchen, every day you’re at home.

Edit: Update on the original thread: I just paid for it all outright. They called me the very next business day about reordering and a timeline, and I figured a reputable kitchen builder in the area wouldn’t risk his good name over a bit of particleboard from Nobilia. =)

@kati1337 .. sometimes you just have to trust your gut feeling. I did the same 17 years ago.

The section above the oven opening was actually supposed to be a bit lower to match the standard wall cabinets. The kitchen manufacturer messed that up, although the drawing was still correct.

Kitchen in renovation state with wooden cabinets, countertop, and tools.
... and with framed cabinet fronts, such things really stand out. The kitchen installer called me from this construction site and one hour later presented a solution .... everything will be installed as is, and new wall cabinets will be ordered, made slightly taller. This way, I could already use the kitchen without having to replace the expensive custom cabinet (tall side panels, etc.), only the wall cabinets. I paid for everything right away.

The result then

Kitchen with wooden cabinets, built-in oven, toaster, paper towel roll, windowsill with plants.
... the frame trims were aligned at the same height.

So, good luck 😉
