ᐅ Kitchen – Missing Cabinet – Is Withholding Payment Justified?

Hello,

Our kitchen is currently being installed. The team is doing a great job so far, and we’re excited to see how it will look. However, we’ll have to wait a few more weeks for the “completely finished” view. The manufacturer forgot one of our cabinets.

The upper section is missing from a tall cabinet above the built-in dishwasher, so there is a gap for now. Once the installers are finished, of course, the remaining payment will be due. We paid a 50% deposit and still owe the other 50%.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Would you withhold part of the final payment because of the missing cabinet, or pay in full and hope they still fix it? If you would withhold something, what amount do you think is appropriate?

Good luck, Kati

Wow, a raised dishwasher, my dream 🙂 - the “gap” does look a bit odd, but if needed, it can also be converted into a shelf in case everything goes wrong...

I would also withhold 10% / 1000 EUR (euros), depending on the total price. For a total of 40,000 EUR (about 43,500 USD), 10% might be too much, but the kitchen will definitely cost well over 5,000 EUR (about 5,400 USD) anyway 🙂

I actually received a request at one point stating that I should pay the total amount minus €1000.
However, this became irrelevant since I had already paid the full amount. =)

In the meantime, the kitchen installers came and fitted the missing cabinet and replaced two other parts. We were allowed to keep the faulty shelf as a goodwill gesture – it’s now stored in our basement – since it would otherwise have been disposed of, which I thought was a shame.

Then one of the dishwashers didn’t work (we have two). I called the kitchen showroom, and the manager immediately contacted the installers (who had left just an hour earlier). They came back only to find out that the corner valve was closed. The classic issue.
I had assumed I wouldn’t be able to access the corner valve. It turned out you just had to pull out the drawer. And they made the trip back just for that. I apologized about 20 times, but they were very friendly and said it was absolutely no problem. =)
