Hello,

we are planning to buy new appliances for our new house. For the washing machine, we want a Miele.

I noticed that Miele offers a “pre-iron” function in some of their newer models. This heats the drum and spins at a certain speed to make laundry smoother.

The question is: what are the benefits? Do T-shirts, jeans, trousers, or sweaters still need to be hung up? Do they still require ironing? What about casual shirts (I assume formal shirts for church or office would still need ironing)? Is it more effective on so-called “wrinkle-free” shirts?

So far, I have only found a few reviews on Amazon about this feature. They say that light shirts (not stiff ones) and T-shirts don’t necessarily need ironing afterward. T-shirts can be worn straight away, and shirts only need to be hung up and will be smooth (though I suspect not perfect). One comment mentioned that ironing afterward is much easier.

Reviews tend to be brief and written shortly after purchase, so I’m asking here in the hope that someone has personal experience with this pre-iron function and can share their insights.

Thanks to a special dealer, we have three specific machines to choose from, with only one featuring the ironing function — but it costs about €200 more.

Thank you.
Best regards

Ironing jeans and t-shirts? Hmm, that hasn’t happened here in 15 years.

I only iron my husband's shirts.

Everything else:
I wash most items at 60°C (140°F), spin at 1400 rpm, and then hang everything neatly on the line—shirts on hangers, wrinkles smoothed out a bit. Jeans are folded while still wet right after washing and finally hung up as well.

After taking the laundry down, I fold it and put it away in the closet.

I do iron shirts, although my husband doesn’t need them very often. Gradually, he is switching to non-iron shirts.

You get the same effect after the laundry comes out of the dryer: it’s warm enough that you don’t necessarily need to iron jeans and regular T-shirts if you take them out fresh and fold them properly right away.

My Miele (WKF 131 WPS, 1220 EUR from a specialist dealer including delivery and installation) has a pre-ironing function. It is pre-set for the “dress shirts” program, which reduces the maximum load by 50% to 1 kg (2.2 lbs) to achieve a good result. Depending on the fabric quality, ironing is usually still necessary if you want an optimal finish (it is called pre-ironing, after all). However, if you hang the shirts on hangers immediately after the program and smooth them out a bit, the result is already quite good. I don’t have much experience yet since I’ve only had the machine for a few weeks. Most of the time, I don’t use the function because it extends the program duration. The regular programs without pre-ironing also don’t leave the laundry too wrinkled. You still need to hang the laundry even with the pre-ironing option, as it is not a dryer function. The laundry is only treated with some steam at the end. According to the manual, the laundry must be suitable for tumble drying and ironing. As an option, pre-ironing can be combined with most wash programs, except for down bedding, outdoor, and sportswear.

Overall, I am very satisfied with the machine so far. The pre-ironing function was not a decisive factor for my purchase, since most Miele machines have it anyway (except for the classic series), unless you mean the advanced SteamCare function. That one can apparently also be used separately and not only after a washing program.

I would say that anyone who is satisfied with so-called non-iron shirts will also find themselves comfortable with these types of features.

In both cases, you should not expect smooth, shaped shirts, exactly like ironed ones.
