ᐅ Planning kitchen appliances: How to approach it. The market is overwhelming.

Hello everyone,

I have an appointment at the kitchen studio next Saturday and I’m preparing for it. Specifically, I’m looking for the appliances I want to have later in the kitchen. I’ve been researching a lot from brands like Neff / Siemens, Miele, Bora, etc., but I’m not making much progress.

For example, the current selection at Siemens looks like this:

Dishwasher IQ300 SN636X03MD
Oven IQ700 HB634GBS1
Microwave IQ500 HF15M264
Cooktop with integrated downdraft extractor EX801LX34E
or
2 x Cooktop IQ700 EX375FXB1E with extractor IQ700 LF16VA570

(The cooktop with integrated downdraft is the only fixed requirement, unfortunately I don’t have any influence on that ^^)

I actually value quality, energy efficiency, and a balanced price-performance ratio. But how can I find out if what you pick is really good? Or if there are possibly cheaper but equally high-quality products from other manufacturers. For example, the cooktop with integrated downdraft extractor from Miele—according to the catalog, it’s cheaper but just as good or even better?

How do you approach this?

We just bought the kitchen last week. We are mixing brands happily but everything fits together visually. The oven and microwave are from Bosch Series 8, the cooktop with an integrated downdraft extractor will be the new one from Neff (very cool because the extractor’s grate is made of cast iron, so you can place hot pots or pans on it), and the dishwasher is from Miele because they simply make the best dishwashers. Otherwise, we will have satin-finished glass fronts in white, and the countertops will be Nero Assoluto.

I’ll share what my electrician, who also deals with appliances, has to say. Stoves, condenser dryers, ovens—simple technology; even brands like Amica or Gorenje last for years. Refrigerators are similar—brand matters less when it comes to durability. Of course, extra features and top energy ratings cost more.

It’s different with washing machines and dishwashers. Here, the components the manufacturer uses—bearings, shock absorbers, pumps, heating elements—make a big difference. According to him, Miele is probably the best. Bosch Siemens, with their higher-priced models, also use good components. AEG’s quality has declined significantly since Electrolux took over. That’s his opinion. Karsten

Visually, the appliances should match, so all visible appliances should be from the same manufacturer.

@Knallkörper The microwave doesn’t fit, I would look for a more suitable one.

So the conclusion is: "Choose the well-known Neff/Siemens/Miele/Bosch brands and everything will be fine."

I will also prepare a list of appliances from Miele and Bosch, and then on Saturday they can just give us a complete quote for everything, once with Miele appliances, once with Siemens appliances, and so on.

What about refrigerators? Is Liebherr still a strong brand on the market?

We can highly recommend Panasonic refrigerators for cooling!

Liebherr... yeah. With some brands like Samsung, the initial enthusiasm fades after about a year. Check the reviews on Amazon.

First, think about which features you need. Then compare the models from different manufacturers (costs for similar quality levels are usually comparable) and choose the one that appeals to you the most in terms of usability and design.

We ultimately decided on Neff (we looked at Bosch, Siemens, Miele, and Neff—Gorenje was quickly ruled out as their technology is clearly less advanced and not comparable; Gaggenau, etc., was outside our desired price range). We also chose an induction cooktop with an integrated downdraft ventilation and a grill. It’s a sleek unit! In addition, we have two ovens: one with a built-in microwave, and the other is a combination steam oven.

By the way, Nordlys, I don’t fully agree with you here. Simple technology is fine... but you don’t want to drive a Dacia either. It works, but why not have a bit of fun? Features do make things more complex and cost more, but they also make it exciting. We cook a lot and really enjoy it.

Nowadays, it’s possible to integrate semi-professional cooking equipment into the kitchen at a relatively “affordable” price. If you enjoy cooking frequently, this is a great addition that opens up new possibilities and fun. Especially the combination steam ovens are simply brilliant, even though they can cost anywhere from 1,500€ to 4,000€ (roughly 1,600 to 4,300 USD).
