ᐅ Are vegetable gardens no longer desired?

Hello everyone!

Yesterday, I marked out the area for our vegetable garden in the yard—about 30sqm (320 sq ft) in total. We’re also adding a greenhouse of around 16sqm (170 sq ft). A small “kitchen garden,” as I would call it.

I got some curious looks from the neighbor, wondering if I’m going fully self-sufficient now.

When I look around new housing developments these days, it’s mostly gravel yards, boxwood shrubs, and solar spheres, while the robotic lawnmower glides over the sterile golf-course-like lawns.

Are there still any enthusiastic gardeners left who quickly dash through the garden before work to pick snails and weed?

I’m a bit sad that I don’t have like-minded people around me. Even my wife is completely opposed to gardening. Such a pity!

If a family member had an allergy to strawberries (which only occurs upon direct contact), I would not avoid them because of that. And yes, many allergies tend to disappear in children over time (although they are then more likely to develop other allergies later on...). By the way, we have relevant experience with this ;-).

The garden should be safe for the little one. I don’t want to have to hold her favorite fruit right in front of her or watch all the time to make sure it doesn’t get eaten.

Children do grow up and are generally not unintelligent. But, it’s your decision :-).

Yes, if older. Strawberries don’t take years to bear fruit.
As long as one strawberry is enough to trigger croup-like symptoms, nothing will go into the garden.

I don’t want another hospital stay due to anaphylactic shock.

I wouldn’t do that either. Always be careful. In our garden, strawberry plants are growing in three spots even though we didn’t plant them. They all came over from the neighbor. I’m leaving them now as ground cover.
