ᐅ Why do some shelves no longer fit in BILLY bookcases?

Hello everyone,

Recently, I have been expanding several BILLY shelves from IKEA and noticed that some replacement shelves I reordered no longer fit properly. Specifically, the holes in the new shelves do not exactly line up with the supports in the unit, or the shelves have slightly different dimensions overall, making them difficult to install without forcing or not fitting at all.

I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences and what might be causing this. Are there different versions of BILLY shelves that are not fully compatible? Or has IKEA slightly changed the shelf dimensions at some point?

Since I would like to add to the shelves, it would be great if you could explain the cause and suggest the best way to resolve this. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Question for the original poster: Have you checked the shelves for compatibility numbers or contacted IKEA directly? How old are your shelves approximately?

Thank you for the detailed response, lorena.

My shelves are about 4-5 years old; I haven’t documented this exactly, but I still have the receipt, which includes the serial number. I called IKEA, but unfortunately, they gave me little concrete information. The staff didn’t seem fully informed and suggested that I try using original parts again.

It’s a pity if the shelves don’t fit anymore with just a 1 mm (0.04 inch) difference—that means previous customers have limited interchangeability over the years. Could the material or environmental factors also affect the fit? I’m thinking less about manufacturing and more about wear and use.

Yes, that can definitely happen. Wood-based materials are sensitive to moisture fluctuations. If the shelf is placed in a rather humid or very dry environment, the material can easily expand or shrink – which can cause fitting issues when tolerances are tight.

I once had a shelf stored in a basement where this issue was particularly noticeable. The shelves fit well in summer, but it became a problem in winter.

It might also be worth checking the storage conditions or whether there are other external influences in your situation.

I think these factors build on each other – IKEA optimizes over time, and the environment also plays a role.

Hello,

I would like to add that BILLY shelves are a very popular and long-standing product. Over the years, IKEA has used different production facilities, which leads to so-called batch variations, something also seen with other furniture.

So, if replacement shelves come from a different production batch or factory than the original shelf, fitting differences are often to be expected.

My advice: if possible, try to obtain replacement shelves from the same “generation” or production line. This at least increases the likelihood that everything will fit properly.

Alternatively, small adjustments like careful sanding or using additional brackets can sometimes help if IKEA does not supply them.

I wish you the best of luck with your project!
