Hello everyone,

Recently, I have been expanding several BILLY shelves from IKEA and noticed that some replacement shelves I reordered no longer fit properly. Specifically, the holes in the new shelves do not exactly line up with the supports in the unit, or the shelves have slightly different dimensions overall, making them difficult to install without forcing or not fitting at all.

I’m curious if anyone else has had similar experiences and what might be causing this. Are there different versions of BILLY shelves that are not fully compatible? Or has IKEA slightly changed the shelf dimensions at some point?

Since I would like to add to the shelves, it would be great if you could explain the cause and suggest the best way to resolve this. Thanks in advance for your advice!

I can really understand your problem – these kinds of issues are very frustrating when you just want to add a shelf.

I had the exact same experience with my BILLY shelves a few months ago when I ordered replacement shelves. It felt like the manufacturer actually altered the dimensions, maybe due to production changes or the thickness of the material.

I then asked for advice in the store and learned that there was indeed an update to the shelves and the shelving units – like a product revision. The new parts are not fully compatible with the older ones.

Maybe this information helps you to specifically look for the correct shelves or to contact the right department in customer support. Keep at it; sometimes the retailer or the salesperson has more detailed information. 🙂

IKEA changed the flooring material a few years ago, which means some no longer fit.

My recommendation: Pay attention to the production date on the shelf and the flooring. Newer models are often not compatible with older frames.

The inconsistency in BILLY shelves is understandable and can be explained by the following factors:

1. Dimensional tolerances: IKEA produces mass-market items where dimensions can vary by hundredths of a millimeter. This can cause fitting issues with reorder items.

2. Product revisions: Interim changes in material thickness or drilling patterns have been documented to improve stability or aesthetics.

3. Variants: Differences exist between BILLY shelves with and without back panel reinforcement, resulting in variations in drilling or shelf positions.

Solution: Carefully compare product numbers of shelves and boards and check compatibility with IKEA.

Hello,

I also had difficulties finding replacement shelves for my older BILLY bookcase. What I learned is that IKEA doesn’t frequently update their product lines, but when they do, it’s usually with minor changes that can affect compatibility.

It’s also important to provide the exact model number and, if possible, the manufacturing year of your bookcase when ordering replacements. Often there are different models with similar dimensions that are not compatible.

If the shelf doesn’t fit, sometimes a visit to the IKEA customer service or a call to their hotline can help. They can often check directly if an exchange or return is possible.

Good luck finding the right shelves!

I would like to explain in more detail the technical background that might be causing your issue:

Firstly, IKEA reduced the thickness of the shelves in the BILLY bookcase from 16 mm to 15 mm (approximately 5/8 inch to 1/2 inch) in some production batches to save material and weight. Although this change is minimal, it affects the fit into the side panels, especially if these are still designed for 16 mm (5/8 inch) shelves.

Additionally, some recent versions have slightly altered the positions of the drill holes to improve the stability of the shelf supports. This usually impacts the shelves that rest on the brackets.

This is very important because the production codes are often subtle but provide information about the series. IKEA customer service can usually clarify which versions are compatible.

Question for the original poster: Have you checked the compatibility numbers on the bookcases or contacted IKEA directly? How old are your bookcases approximately?
