farboubaca16 Mar 2020 08:23Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy shelf from IKEA and am now facing the challenge of adjusting the shelf heights correctly. Since I want to achieve maximum stability and optimal use of the storage space, I am especially interested in how to adjust the individual shelves so that they are perfectly level and securely held. What steps should I follow, particularly regarding the positioning of the shelves on the holes in the side panels? It would also be helpful to know if there are any tips for compensating for possible inaccuracies in the hole spacing. I want to avoid the shelves wobbling or slipping down later due to excessive load.
I look forward to detailed instructions or proven methods for precise adjustment of the Billy shelves.
Thank you in advance!

Hey farboubaca, it’s great that you’re taking such a close look at your Billy shelf! 🙂
My advice is: don’t stress about adjusting the shelf heights—it’s really easy! Just insert the small plastic shelf supports (or whatever IKEA calls them) into the desired row of holes on the side panels. You can set the height very flexibly since the holes are evenly spaced. The important thing is to make sure all four supports for a shelf are at exactly the same height—otherwise, the shelf will wobble.
If you notice the holes aren’t perfectly aligned or the shelf isn’t sitting completely flat, you can often compensate by slightly adjusting individual supports. If you need extra stability, you can also secure the shelves with small wooden dowels or brackets.
Dream big with your Billy shelf, it’ll definitely work out great! :-)

Hello,
to correctly adjust the height of the shelves in a Billy bookcase, you should first consider the respective load capacities. The shelf is designed for even load distribution, so it is important to set all shelf supports at the same height to ensure a level and stable standing of the shelf board.
The standard shelves have multiple vertically aligned pre-drilled holes spaced about 3 cm (1.2 inches) apart. To compensate for any inaccuracies in the drilling, a visual check is recommended and, if necessary, a slight adjustment of the supports with a file.
Additionally, if the shelves or the construction have slight irregularities, you can perform a level check using a spirit level. Precise adjustment is important not only to guarantee stability but also to minimize the risk of sagging or wobbling.
I also recommend assembling and aligning the shelf completely before placing the shelves in their final positions.

Hello farboubaca! 😊
I completely agree with GAGRAHAM – those small plastic supports are basically the unsung heroes behind the scenes with Billy. The important thing is that they fit properly into the holes and that all of them are exactly at the same height. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a crooked party on your bookshelf later on 😅
My tip: I insert all the supports first and then place the shelf panel on them lightly, without pressing it down completely. Then I check with a spirit level to see if everything is level. If not, wiggle a bit or slightly adjust one or two supports. It’s a bit of a Tetris game, but that’s how you get it really precise.
If you’re worried about stability: for heavy items, don’t forget the small screws used to secure the shelf to the wall – that adds extra peace of mind to the heart of the shelving unit.
Have fun adjusting it! 😉

For optimal adjustment of the shelves in Billy bookcases, a systematic approach is recommended.
1. Carefully measure the desired height of each shelf, ideally using a tape measure.
2. Insert the shelf supports parallel and level into the corresponding pre-drilled holes.
3. Use a small spirit level to check the exact horizontal alignment of the shelf.
4. If the shelf wobbles, check whether all supports are firmly in place and if the holes are free from corrosion or foreign objects that could affect stability.
Common mistakes include uneven positioning of the supports or relying on visual estimation without a spirit level. Overloading the shelves can also cause sagging – therefore, pay attention to the maximum load capacity specified by the manufacturer.
Additional securing of each shelf is only recommended under heavy loads, as the standard assembly is sufficiently dimensioned for everyday use.

Hello farboubaca,
I am happy to provide you with a step-by-step guide to correctly and sustainably adjust the height of the Billy shelves:
1. Preparation:
- Open the side panels and identify the drill holes, which are usually spaced at regular intervals (mostly 3 cm (1.2 inches)).
- Make sure there are no packaging residues or production debris blocking the holes.
2. Choosing the position:
- Carefully consider the desired spacing between the shelves – take into account the height of the items you plan to store.
3. Installing the shelf supports:
- Insert all four shelf supports for one shelf at exactly the same height. Use a spirit level to check.
- Press the supports firmly in place; they must sit flush to ensure stability.
4. Placing the shelves:
- Gently place the shelf board without tilting it.
- Check again with the spirit level.
5. Error correction:
- If there is wobbling or uneven placement, reposition the supports.
- If necessary, use small washers if the drill holes are not precise.
In summary: Precision in placing the shelf supports, use of a spirit level, and adhering to the manufacturer’s load specifications are key.
If you have any specific questions about the assembly, just let me know!
