ᐅ Why do some BILLY shelf boards no longer fit into the brackets?

Hello everyone,
I have the following problem: Some of the shelves for my Billy bookshelf no longer fit into the designated supports, even though I have not changed any measurements and they originally fit perfectly. Are there any known causes or changes in the Billy shelves or supports that might explain why they suddenly don’t lock in properly anymore? I suspect that tolerances may have shifted over time or due to changes in production. Or could it be related to assembly, deformation caused by moisture, or other factors?
I would appreciate factual and as detailed explanations as possible, since I would like to continue using the bookshelf if possible without having to buy everything new.

Keatondra19 Sep 2020 09:47Hello matko44,
I’m happy to explain: IKEA has made minor adjustments to BILLY shelves over the years, especially concerning accessories like shelves or brackets. This is mainly because different production sites sometimes have slightly different tolerances.
Additionally, the materials can vary slightly between batches, for example, the thickness or coating of the particleboard. These tiny differences usually go unnoticed but can cause shelves that are already fitted tightly to be harder to install or not fit at all.
My advice: If you mix different shelves, check that they all have exactly the same thickness and edge profile! Otherwise, problems may occur. If possible, use shelves from the same batch or ensure compatibility when buying from IKEA.

IKEA has actually made slight adjustments to BILLY shelves over the yearsI didn’t know that! Thanks for the information! :-)
I really appreciate how many helpful details are coming together here. So, to summarize:
- Humidity and sources of the wood-based materials
- Possible small dimensional variations between different IKEA batches
- Brackets and shelves may fit differently as a result
Would it make sense to simply replace the brackets if there are any fitting issues?
Looking forward to more input!

Would it be practical to simply replace the brackets if there are problems?Good point! I’m currently wondering if the issue might be with the bracket itself. Some brackets could be slightly bent due to stress, which, given tight clearances, is enough to affect the fit.
Does anyone have experience with how durable the brackets for BILLY are? And are there any alternatives if the original IKEA parts no longer fit properly or are unavailable?

JULIANNALO19 Sep 2020 11:05BILLY brackets are quite sturdy but not indestructible. If they are bent or damaged, replace them. Spare parts are available at IKEA or well-stocked hardware stores – usually standard shelf supports that are very similar.

I already feel much better prepared, thanks for all the helpful contributions so far!
