ᐅ Why do some Billy bookcase doors no longer fit the shelves perfectly?

I have recently noticed that some Billy doors no longer fit perfectly on the shelving unit and either close with difficulty or get stuck on the sides. This does not seem to be just a matter of installation, as I found no obvious mistakes during assembly. My question is therefore: why do some Billy doors no longer fit perfectly on the shelving unit, even though everything appears to have been installed correctly? Could material changes, production tolerances, or environmental factors play a role? I would like to understand if there are typical causes or known issues and how to best fix them without damaging the doors or the shelving unit.

One thing I often notice:

Material swelling: The doors are made of wood-based panels that react to moisture and can deform slightly.
That is absolutely correct. Additionally, it is important not to place the shelving directly next to a heating source or poorly insulated windows when setting it up. Temperature and humidity fluctuations increase deformation.

Furthermore, during installation, care should be taken not to overtighten the screws on the hinges to avoid creating internal stresses. Gentle adjustment of the doors helps preserve the mechanism in the long term.

In advance: I doubt that material swelling or installation errors alone can fully explain the entire problem.

Manufacturing tolerances... add up with installation conditions

I agree, but I wonder if some of the issues might also stem from changes in production standards over recent years. Does anyone have data on changes at IKEA regarding material thickness or hinge quality?

Do brand-new sets from the current range still fit the door perfectly? This could help determine whether the discrepancy is an 'old problem' or a 'new problem.'

Previous answers hit the mark: warped doors, incorrectly adjusted hinges, or shelves not level. An additional tip: if doors stick, gently sand the edges with fine sandpaper. But be careful not to remove too much material.

Thank you for your detailed responses. The advice regarding material swelling and hinge adjustment was especially helpful.

I have one more question: Are there any general guidelines on how long wood or MDF usually takes to acclimate to the indoor climate after installation, or whether it is advisable to store doors in the room for several days before fitting them?

Additionally, I am curious whether it is recommended or even necessary to tighten screws using special tools or specific torque settings, or if normal hand strength is sufficient.

Looking forward to more tips!
