Hello everyone, I am currently looking into the topic of IKEA BILLY bookcases and have made a specific observation: Why are some BILLY bookcases more prone to damage and deformation than others? I have the impression that this is not only due to improper use or assembly but that different production batches or material qualities might also play a role. You often read about customers whose bookcases become unstable or scratched after a short time, while others have used their BILLY for years with almost no signs of wear. I am particularly interested in which factors – ranging from the type of wood or particleboard, the surface finish, the manufacturing quality, to the assembly instructions – might truly affect this sensitivity. Has anyone in the community had similar experiences or even firsthand information? I would appreciate a detailed explanation and assessment.

Thank you all for your contributions so far; they have really helped get things moving.

@lise56: I find your observations about the different back panels very interesting. I actually checked my own bookshelf and noticed that my older model has a sturdy MDF back panel, while a newer BILLY only has a thin particleboard back. That could indeed explain more warping or instability.

@elgla: Your comment about assembly hits the mark—I also believe that even small slips during construction can amplify issues.

To add another perspective: Have you noticed any differences in shelves with special surface finishes such as films or laminates? I’ve read that matte films may be more resistant to scratches but might not hold up as well against moisture.

I wonder if it’s possible to manage the problem through more deliberate choice of finish or perhaps by treating the shelf afterward. What do you think? For example, would it make sense to additionally impregnate the shelf, or is it better to avoid use in damp areas altogether?

Looking forward to hearing more opinions!
